Roberto Di Matteo has called for Chelsea to be patient with Jose Mourinho and thinks that the Portuguese will change the club’s fortunes soon.
Di Matteo, so far Chelsea’s only Champions League winning manager, is quoted in the English media as saying that only stability will ensure the Blues’ long term success and that sacking Mourinho would only do more harm.
He is quoted as saying:
“I really hope Mourinho is going to stay long- term. Stability is so important.
“Only four months ago we won the league and League Cup double. Chelsea have been so successful for the last 15 years and it can happen that you have a bad year.
“But there is so much quality in the team and the club has one of the best managers in the world.”
Di Matteo played for Chelsea between 1996 and 2002 when a broken leg forced him to retire. He won the Champions League as manager in 2012 having replaced Andre Villas-Boas. He was himself sacked in favour Rafael Benitez with whom Chelsea won the Europa League.
