Now not only a £200m campaign and pride motivate Louis van Gaal to push Man United into the top four: according to reports he is also expected to receive £1m should he lead Red Devils into the top four.

According to the Daily Star, the bonus was set last summer when it was made clear to the former Netherlands manager when he took over that finishing the season in the top four was the top priority – and minimum requirement.

It’s vital for Manchester United, having missed out last season after finishing seventh under David Moyes, to gain a UEFA Champions League spot. That’s because of the financial impact on the club not only under a competititive point of view, but also because the visibility Champions League have in every continent is really important for a club that relies on its own brand as much as United does.
