Manchester United paid a record fee to sign ex Monaco19-years-old striker Anthony Martial on deadline day: £36m that made him the the most expensive teenager in the history of football.
A Red Devils’ insider told to Daily Mail that they had to offer this record fee because other giants were keen on the wonderkid, and among this was Chelsea:
“Barcelona, Paris St Germain, Chelsea and City were all in on pre-contract for Martial next season. We paid a premium to get him now. It is similar to what we did with [Cristiano] Ronaldo – and that turned out OK.”
It’s also undestood that Manchester United could end up paying £56million for the 19 year-old should he qualify for a series of performance-related bonuses during his time at United, including winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or award.
