On-loan Chelsea midfielder Nathanial Chalobah has been accused of punching a Birmingham City’s Diego Fabbrini during Reading’s defeat last night.
Chalobah, who joined the Berkshire side on loan in January, was the subject of Gary Rowett’s wrath as the Birmingham manager accused the 20-year old of hitting Fabbrini who was forced off wearing a face guard after just 34 minutes.
It looked to me like Chalobah threw a little punch and he has cracked Diego’s mask right down the middle,” Rowett said after his team’s 1-0 win. He continued:
“He did a little trick on Chalobah early in the match and I don’t think he was too happy with that. You know when you have got a mask on people are going to target that.”
The defeat for reading came just five days after they also lost out to Arsenal, Chelsea’s next opponents, in the FA Cup semi-final at the weekend.
Reading manager, former Chelsea right-back and assistant coach Steve Clarke, did not blame the Wembley disappointment on the loss.
“I don’t think it was an FA Cup hangover – we just did not take the chances that came our way.”
