Speaking on BT Sport after Man City’s win at Stamford Bridge tonight, Frank Lampard revealed some of the details behind De Bruyne’s Chelsea exit in 2014, when the young Belgian moved to Wolfsburg.

The Blues legend claimed:

“I think it was a difficult time for the club because they had Hazard, they had Oscar and Willian had just signed so you couldn’t play them all.

“And Kevin De Bruyne, his development wasn’t where it is now. He was very good at a lot of things in his game and now I think he’s great at a lot of things in his game.

“Of course it’s easy in retrospect to look at Chelsea and ask them why did you let him go but sometimes players develop at different rates – and Kevin has gone away and made himself a world class player.

On whether Lampard saw it for himself on the training ground, he said: “You don’t know, you always wonder about development. He had good pace, he had good passing, he had good dribbling skills but at that point he couldn’t get into our team.

And the one thing he had was a lot of ambition. You could see he was upset that he wasn’t playing and I don’t mind that in a young player he wanted to go away and prove that he’s a player.”

“What I liked about when he was here at Chelsea was he made a decision straight away – ‘I want to leave. I want to go and play football’.

“And for a young lad to do that at such a club [as Chelsea] and prove himself somewhere else at a lesser club in a lesser league is a huge thing to do.”

Juan Mata of Manchester United has written has gratitude towards Chelsea fans after the reception he got during the match between Chelsea and Manchester United. Although he may have left Chelsea for Manchester in January 2014, he remains a huge fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.

On his personal blog, he wrote “It’s always special for me to play in Stamford Bridge. My feelings are different in a day like this, but once the referee blows the whistle for the kick-off, in my mind the only goal is to win, to give everything you have to help the team and to enjoy on the pitch,”

“I have to say that I’m deeply grateful for the reception from the Chelsea fans and their applause when I was substituted. Moments like these ennoble football and it’s something you keep in your memory forever,” he continued.

Atletico Madrid’s president has furthered rumours of the clubs interest in bringing back Diego Costa. After joining Chelsea in the summer of 2014 from Atletico in a £32 million deal, Mr Costa is thought to be unsettled and Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in capitalising on this.

Enrique Cerezo said, “We have a great relationship with our past players Diego is a great player, but a Chelsea player.

“We will try to do our best and see what Chelsea say, it does not depend on us. We always try to bring the best players and Diego is one of them.”

Didier Drogba’s Chelsea future has been cast into fresh doubt after Jose Mourinho admitted the Ivorian is yet to be offered a contract for next season.

Drogba returned to Stamford Bridge after a two year absence last summer, having left Galatasaray on a free transfer. His first spell in west London resulted in 157 goals, and a legacy as one of Chelsea’s greatest ever players following that memorable night in Munich, when he scored the winning penalty to give the club it’s first Champions League victory. He also won three Premier League titles and was notable for his contribution in big games, both domestically and European.

Drogba has so far added six goals to his Chelsea tally this season, and has often been used as a third choice striker behind Diego Costa and Loic Remy. Now, rumours about his next step have been abound; retirement, coaching, or a return to Ligue 1 – where Chelsea signed him from in 2004 – among them.

“Drogba’s future is to train Tuesday and to play against QPR.” Mourinho answered when the question was put to him, notably not committing either way on what the club’s plans are for the 37-year-old. Playing time for Drogba is likely to be more available until the end of the season after Costa aggravated his hamstring injury in the victory over Stoke City on Saturday.
