Alvaro Morata

After a difficult start of the season, Alvaro Morata has scored four times in the last five Premier League games and Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri now praises his Spanish striker, not only as a player, but also as a man.

Morata is a quality player, fast and technically gifted”. Sarri said. “He’s a sensible person and the difficulties had hurt him. The results and the quality of our football are positive”.

Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata have often been criticised so far during this season and their difficulties have been underlined again after Chelsea‘s goalless draw vs Everton on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.

However, the French striker claims he and his team-mates not only have been useful for the Blues in many other ways, but also he promises both will score again soon. All the speculation is part of the sport, part of the job. We must expect good players, good strikers at big clubs. But the both of us just need to carry on and show the team is doing well with us. It’s true that at times we didn’t score. But, as I always used to say, some strikers need to do the runs for team-mates, to do the things that people don’t see”. Giroud told the Evening Standard. “We are fully committed to Chelsea. Even if sometimes it wasn’t perfect, I will always give my maximum. I’m not worried about the future and I’m sure we will score more goals for the team. It (the talk of Chelsea signing another forward) doesn’t trouble me, no. I am a competitor and I will do my best until the end of my contract.”

Pedro was the man who led Chelsea to their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace as the Spaniard scored the third goal which faded the visitors’ hopes to plan a turnaround. Alvaro Morata had put the Blues back in front after Townsend’s equalizer in the second half.

Pedro told Chelsea TV: “Yes it was a very good day for us and for all the team,

The team worked very hard and I’m very happy to score a goal and get the three points because it’s very important for us to stay near the top and to continue in this way”.

“The team are playing very well, moving the ball with one or two touches, creating chances and winning games. The important thing for us is getting the three points but we just need to take it step by step and game by game”.

The Chelsea winger also praised teammate and compatriot Morata, who’s growing in confidence after scoring 5 goals from 6 consecutive matches so far.

Pedro said: “After, when Alvaro scored again, we controlled the game and moved the ball faster, I then scored the third and that was good”.

“He’s in good condition and he had a very good performance. He has the mentality to score goals and help the team, that’s the best way for him”.

“We are happy because he’s a very good striker. He runs a lot and scores goals, now he’s in a very good moment so this is the way for him. Scoring goals is very important for him and the team”.

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata has now scored 5 goals in 6 matches and was decisive in the Blues’ victory over Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge last time out.

Maurizio Sarri believes the Spaniard could even score more in a near future: “I think so, Alvaro has improved in the last month in confidence and personality.

He has also improved from the technical point of view, now he’s able to play more with the team. He has great physical and technical potential and I think he can improve more”.

“For Alvaro, goals have to be a consequence, he has to play for the team and his team-mates without thinking about goals. That is a consequence of the team and the individual performance. He’s a little bit fragile from the mental point of view but he’s very young and he can improve very fast”.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Alvaro Morata both started for Spain, while Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga came off the bench in the second half to replace Man United star David De Gea on Thursday night at the Millennium Stadium.

Spain defeated Wales 4-1 with goals from defenders Marc Bartra and Sergio Ramos and a brace from Dortmund’s Paco Alcacer.

Wales defender and Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu was picked-up to play as a central midfielder and went close to scoring for Ryan Giggs‘ men. Then the 18-year-old limped off the pitch with a knee injury in the second half, as Chelsea’s official website confirmed.

Alvaro Morata has played very well” says Maurizio Sarri speaking after his side’s 0-3 win at St.Mary’s Stadium earlier this afternoon.

The Spaniard, whose goal helped Chelsea to cruise to a narrow victory in their Europa League clash against MOL Vidi on Thursday, scored against Southampton as Blues moved up to the top of Premier League table.

Sarri said: “I am very happy for him. It is important for the striker to score, to have scored in the Europa League and today. But it was important the performance. He has played very well. I think we can restart easily now”.

The ones who love betting will go to bed disappointed tonight: surely many of them had bet an over 2.5, but Chelsea obtained a 1-0 win against Vidi thanks to a goal from Alvaro Morata with 20 minutes to go after a disappointing performance from the Blues.

Maurizio Sarri, as announced, made a heavy rotation, with Zappacosta, Christensen, Emerson, Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek and Morata starting.

Vidi were really organized and didn’t conceed many chances to Chelsea but the biggest one was thrown away by Morata: the Spaniard, completely alone against the Hungarians’ keeper Vujdel, kicked the ball in the Shed End.

Nothing was happening in the beginning of the first half, so Sarri let Eden Hazard enter for Pedro after just 9 minutes and later Ross Barkley replaced Loftus-Cheek to try to change the game, and he did it.

Chelsea were immediately more lively and dangerous and eventually the Blues were able to score when Fabregas floated a lovely ball into Willian and the Brazilian did very well to flick the ball into Morata’s path, who could score with a great volée: a huge relief for the Spanish striker.

After taking the lead Chelsea seemed more comfortable and in control of the game, but Vidi didn’t give up and tried to equalise until the very last gasp, but they weren’t able to take a point back to Hungary.

With these three points and PAOK 4-1 win at Bate Borisov Chelsea are still leading their group with 6 points: the next game is against Bate in Belarus on 25 October.

Antonio Rudiger believes Chelsea cannot depend just on Eden Hazard‘s goals and performances.

The German defender aimed a dig to three of his team-mates, claiming they have to improve and to more:

“We need to learn to kill matches. It’s not only on Eden’s shoulders. We need the other players to help him with scoring.

“He has been doing his job very well again, but the other guys must score too. Giroud, Morata, Willian have to score. As a team all of us have to provide more goals, the defenders as well.

“At the end of the day the best scorers are Hazard and Pedro, but with the quality of players we have on the pitch, it’s (the lack of goals from elsewhere) not too good.”

ESPN pundit Craig Burley reckons this Alvaro Morata is becoming a a problem for Chelsea  and that Maurizio Sarri somehow has to get the Spanish striker firing again:

“He was given an opportunity and he was hopeless again, absolutely hopeless,” Burley explained on ESPN FC.

“I just can’t fathom this guy out. He led the line for Real Madrid and Juventus, played in the Champions League final, played for Spain and just looks as if he’s completely lost.

“Do you know what he reminds me of? Do you remember when Chelsea paid £50m for Fernando Torres?

“Torres in his time at Liverpool was an absolutely wonderful player but he wasn’t that player when Chelsea signed him.”

Alvaro Morata started the game against PAOK before being replaced by Olivier Giroud later in the second period, with 9 minutes left to go in Chelsea‘s opening game of Europa League group stage.

Chelsea cruised to a 0-1 win courtesy of an early goal from Brazilian star Willian, with Pedro injured.

And manager Maurizio Sarri, speaking after the clash, stated “Alvaro was unlucky” against the Greek side.

“Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two, three goals. I am not able to give him confidence. In this match he has had three, four opportunities” Sarri said.

“He was unlucky. I hope for him that in the future I can try to help him, but the confidence can become only with goals. With two goals in two matches. I don’t know.

“I also have to say Alvaro was ready in the box, maybe for the first time this season. He was active”.
