In a statement issued by a club spokesman, Chelsea striker Diego Costa has insisted he didn’t bite Gareth Barry: “Diego spoke to club officials after the game and expressed regret over his reaction to the challenge from Gareth Barry that led to his red card.”

Then, he added: “But Diego was also very clear that he did not bite him at any point during that altercation.”

Costa, who had already been booked, reacted to a foul by the Toffees veteran, jumping to his feet and pushing his head into his opponent.

According to the Sunday Supplement panel, Costa had an ulterior motive for his unacceptable behaviour at Goodison Park yesterday in which he received a red card late on and appeared to bite Everton midfielder Gareth Barry.

The Sun‘s European football correspondent Antony Kastrinakis told the Sunday Supplement that he believes Costa‘s action to be part of a plan.

“Costa had exactly the same reputation at Athletico Madrid as he has developed in England. His behaviour over the last few months is purely to show Roman Abramovich that he wants out.

“He wanted out last May. There were stories from various friends of his that he wanted to return to Atletico Madrid. It could have been done in January when Athletico made a bid, but Chelsea would not let him go.

“I think all of this is his frustration, because he wants to play elsewhere.”

Also, the Daily Star‘s chief sports writer Jeremy Cross believes there is more to the incident than meets the eye.

“There is probably an ulterior motive to his behaviour, but he is idolised by children all over Europe and here in the Premier League – you just don’t do it.

“It just sums him up. He obviously has a switch that goes on and off.

“Chelsea will worry because he will have a reputation that precedes him with referees, and opposition players will be out to wind him up.”

Ruud Gullit, former Chelsea manager, told BBC Sport: “Romelu Lukaku scored a fantastic goal. The way he turned Gary Cahill, an experienced player, he came with power and pace. This game needed something magical, I loved it. This is the FA Cup, it is a good thing that the two teams had nothing to play for elsewhere”

Then, he added: “Diego Costa ’s reaction summed up what he did before. He banged into him and Gareth Barry says, ‘OK’. Did he bite him?”

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: “It is a fantastic feeling, more than anything the atmosphere that was created. Every one of us will take it away. I am the one bringing expectation and every single player at the club has the right mental character. We wanted to get to Wembley and our chairman deserves that for what he has achieved.”

Speaking about Romelo Lukaku‘s great performance, he said: “His goal was one of the greatest goals we will see in the FA Cup. We had the responsibility to relieve the pain and did that in the last 12 minutes. Today was the complete feeling.”

About Diego Costa‘s tussle with Gareth Barry: “I can’t comment if Diego Costa did anything. It is a game full of emotions and there were two sending-offs, the referee played a very good game.”
