Callum Hudson-Odoi bagged his first ever senior goal in Chelsea‘s 4-0 win against PAOK at Stamford Bridge tonight. The visitors suffered an early red card as defender Khacheridi was sent off after stopping Olivier Giroud as the last man.

The French forward found the lead in the 27th minute following a brilliant display from Pedro on the edge of the penalty area. Giroud scores again in the first half, while Callum Hudson-Odor netted his first senior goal cutting inside and firing home past the goalkeeper with a shot which goes behind his near post. There’s still one to come as Alvaro Morata, well assisted by the 18-year-old, headed home from a close range.

Chelsea’s top spot was already guaranteed as a result of BATE Borisov‘s home win against MOL Vidi earlier this evening.

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud was the protagonist of the match against BATE Borisov. His header gave to Chelsea the passage to the next stage of the Europa League.

The Frenchman, who spoke at the end of the game, admitted the best thing to get from the clash is the result.

Giroud sais: “The best aspect is the result, I think. We didn’t play very well. I didn’t like the first half. We moved it too slowly. We could have been more efficient

“We defended very well and they defended cohesively so it was difficult to find solutions at times and stop them on the break.”

He also spoke about his goal, the first one of the season: I was hoping to score soon because I came back late from the World Cup and I was lacking maybe a bit of efficiency and luck but you always need to keep working hard and keep the faith and that’s what happened tonight”

An important win in Belarus allowed Chelsea to book a place into the Europa League last 36, however Blues boss Maurizio Sarri highlighted the best things from the game against Bate Borisov was the result.

The Italian admitted “Chelsea did not play very well” last despite getting an away victory thanks to Olivier Giroud‘s header:

“I think the best thing of the game is the result, I think. We didn’t play very well” Sarri said.

“I didn’t like the first half. We moved it too slowly. It was very difficult to be dangerous, better in the second half. We didn’t manage the last 15 minutes well. The best thing is the result. It wasn’t very easy to play a good game here, with the conditions. I think we could have done better”.

“I am pleased for [Olivier] Giroud. He is a very important for us. I know very well a striker wants to score. For his confidence I think it is very important.”

Sarri was also asked about the importance of being qualified with two games still to go:

“I think the first aspect is the qualification” he said.

“We need one point more to win the group, that is the next target. Then we can think about the next round in February. They attacked very well in the last few minutes. They played much better than at Stamford Bridge.”

A brilliant brilliant from Belarusian side Bate Borisov was not enough to take points against Chelsea as Olivier Giroud‘s header is the difference at Borisov Arena this evening. Baga hit the post and Kepa made a massive save in a tough first half.

Chelsea marked his first shot of the game through Emerson in the 37th minute. Stasevich and Rios both went close to scoring earlier in the second period, after the Chelsea striker put the Blues in front. Willian came on for Hazard with 30 minutes left to go, Bate hit another post from a last-minute corner.

Chelsea will face Burnley on Sunday in the Premier League and this will be an important game for Maurizio Sarri‘s side who want to be in the title race until the end of the season.

Blues defender Gary Cahill is aware of the difficulties of this match:

It (the battle for the Premier League) is certainly going to be tight this season. As far as the Burnley game goes, these are the matches you need to win if you are going to compete at the top”. Cahill told the Evening Standard. “This is a very difficult game – going away to Burnley. Everyone knows that. These are the fixtures you have to churn out the victories in. That is how I have seen it over the years and this season will be no different”.

Moreover, the season is still very long and Chelsea have now one more rival, according to Gary Cahill: “Arsenal are on an incredible run of form at the minute. When they lost at our place (in August) and already points off the top, people were writing them off”. the defender went on. “All of a sudden they have been in unbelievable form. That’s what can happen. We did it the last time we won the League after losing at Arsenal and at home to Liverpool. Then we won 13 games in a row, which is why people should wait till the new year.”

In any case Chelsea are now in a good position and they can compete to win the Premier League: “I think if you are in a good position after Christmas and coming into January, you feel like you have a chance,” Cahill said. “There are loads of games to play until then, a lot can happen. It’s just a matter of going from one weekend to the next and building a momentum.  It’s great when you go back into training after getting three points. It’s the same going into training today after winning in the Europa League (against BATE Borisov) last night. It’s much better than going in after a loss. That’s why I say momentum is key and we have that right now.”

After his impressive hat-trick against Bate Borisov in Europa League Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri praised Ruben Loftus-Cheek who used the chance the manager gave him last night at the best:

“At the beginning of the season he was a very good player, now he is a good player more suitable to my way of football I think,” said Sarri after the game.

“We have a tactical problem with the midfielders because for two positions we have four midfielders and three of them have the same characteristics.

“They are offensive midfielders, only one has other characteristics. Kante is a defensive midfielder.

“So it is very difficult to put in the starting XI two midfielders with the same characteristics.”
