Chelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta reveals how he helped team-mate Victor Moses to adapt to his new full-back role:

“Victor has played most of the time as a winger but he has to defend in this role now and he needs help,” the Spanish player told Sky Sports

“I have talked with him and explained a lot of the defensive side because he has to adapt to that now.

“He’s offensive-minded, we have seen that when he gets in those positions, but he’s working hard and it’s great to have him in the side.”

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta spoke after the win against Hull City, explaining how the Blues were back to success:

“Obviously we worked for this clean sheet,” he said to Chelsea official website.

“It’s always nice not to concede goals. The last month we have conceded too many goals and this is bad for the whole team.

“As a defender I obviously don’t like this so from the whole team the message was clear: work together.

“We need to work as a team. The strikers don’t find chances, they need good balls from the back to be able to create chances. The clean sheet is always the work of the whole team; we pressed together.

“In the first half we were playing well – but not very well – and I think we controlled the game apart from the shot Thibaut [Courtois] saved.

“The team looked good but we were not creating enough up front. We were not aggressive, we lost the ball in silly positions.

“In the second half the tempo was higher, we moved the ball quicker and we found spaces between the lines. The people up front created a lot of movement and chances. With the quality we have, it’s difficult to defend.’

“The manager [Antonio Conte] is always trying to find the best solution for the team and for the game,’ he said. ‘Last week we were working on the system, I trained in this position and I’m happy to help the team wherever the manager needs me.

“When you win, it means the training and the whole week was for the result.

“It’s my first time maybe that we play with three at the back at Chelsea from the start of a game. It is important for the team to have different solutions.

“We have players who can play different positions and this gives us more options for the team to be able to create more and be more competitive. It’s a big part for the team to change and to be able to manage different situations.

“It’s up to the manager to choose the best formation for every game. To make a good system, first of all, you have to work together, to run and fight together, to play together – then the system can make the difference.

“All of us – the whole club, the fans – were disappointed with the performance against Arsenal. The only way was to stick together, work hard and here we saw the result. That was important for us.”

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta believes the Blues’ need ‘to get as close as possible to perfection, even if it’s hard’.

The Spaniard told the club’s official website: “We have to move on quickly – he said – Overall it’s been a good start to the season. We were disappointed with the last game but the team have played well so far, apart from conceding some goals, which is always something to improve”.

“Since the beginning of pre-season the manager has tried to explain his ideas, his methods. We have been working really hard. We had a very good pre-season, even if the results weren’t perfect”.

“Our target was to get in to the best condition for the start of the season which we did, and then to keep going like that because May is a long way away”.

Speaking about new manager Antonio Conte, 27-year-old added: “He’s a very intense manager during games, it’s like he’s playing in it”,

“He shows a lot of passion and intensity, and he wants us players to have the same feeling. He’s the kind of manager who kicks every ball, he’s running after it all the time. It shows his good spirit”.

Chelsea are set to face Liverpool tonight and Azpilicueta is confident that to play at Stamford Bridge could be a strong point.

“Last season every team who came to Stamford Bridge were thinking they could get the points – he said – This cannot happen because it’s our home and we have to be strong enough to get the points”.

“We have shown we can do that in our games so far and with the intensity we have played with. The fans are amazing too and we have to give them what they want, we have to fight for every ball and try to play good football, and then in the end, most importantly, get the result”.

“Chelsea v Liverpool on a Friday night, it’s an exciting fixture and we want to make sure we start the weekend in a good way”.

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta was obviously disappointed after losing two points at Swansea but he could see some positive things in this draw the team obtained in Wales:

“It’s a huge disappointment because we had control of the game for most of the time. We came here to get three points and to go away with one is disappointing.

About the Swans second goal he said:

“The second goal was a clear foul on Garyut the spirit of the team was very good.”

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta commented the win in the Prmier League opener against West Ham:

“We deserved to win, we didn’t deserve to concede the goal and to get the spirit and confidence back from the equaliser was a tough point but the team reacted very well.

“Our target was to start the second half strongly because in the first half we played well but we couldn’t get the goal everyone was looking for.

“Our main target was to control the game, to press and recover the ball as quickly as possible. I felt we played well with the ball; we had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances. We recovered the ball really high and that was a key point which we did really well.’

Azpilicueta also praised N’Golo Kante for the great display in his Stamford Bridge debut:

“N’Golo is a big help to the whole team, he covers a lot of space and makes really good interceptions He’s clever with the ball and makes good passes so I think he will be a key player for us.

Now Chelsea will have to face Watford at Vicarage Road next Saturday:

“The first step was to get the three points last night, we fought really hard and now we must focus on Watford.”

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta stated that the Blues showed their mental strength in the friendly game against Werder Bremen in the past weekend:

“It was our last game of pre-season and we wanted to finish in a good way and to get a win which we did,” he said to Chelsea official website.

“We played a very good first few minutes, we linked very well, we attacked, and we pressed very well. We were playing three days after a lot of travelling so I think the team spirit was very good. We showed a great mentality.

“To concede the two goals is not nice of course, so there were some things we were not happy about, but we are trying to improve in every training session and then make it happen in the games.”

Continuing to speak about the playing style of the team, he said:

“It’s important to be flexible in terms of formation.

Azplicueta seems enthusiastic about Antonio Conte’s coaching style:

“Every time the manager tries the best solution so we, the players, have to be ready to adapt to play in every system. The target is always the same, to beat the opponent, and with the different formations we can play we always have the ability to do that.

“We will try to get as close as possible to perfection as we can, even if it’s hard.

“We are ready for work for that, we have a good few more days of training before the season starts, the games are finished, and now it’s time to focus on West Ham. We are excited.”

Chelsea will start against Hammers in the Premier League next Monday 15 August at 8 pm.

Last year Chelsea were part of the worst title defence in the history of the Premier League. After being crowned champions in 2015 under Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese manager couldn’t find similar form in the early stages of the following season and was dismissed before the turn of the year, leaving Guus Hiddink to pick up the pieces as interim boss.

Hiddink could only muster 10th place in the league and now everyone involved with the Blues will be hoping that new manager Antonio Conte can produce something much better in the upcoming campaign.

Chelsea full-back Cesar Azpilicueta told Sky Sports that the bosses at Stamford Bridge will not accept anything outside of the top four and challenging for the title will be their target.

“Our minimum target is to reach the top four but we have to challenge for trophies and we have to challenge for the title.

“We are coming from a very low position and we are not happy with that.

“We want to come back to our real position, which is fighting for the title.

“Last season was very hard for us and our fans also but they were behind us all season.

“We were suffering but now is the time to start from the beginning.

“We have to show that we are back and that we can challenge for a title.”
