Cesar Azpilicueta, who already won two Premier League titles with Chelsea, reckons the Blues they must try to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City to win the league this season.

“We are the team that have won more titles in recent years in England,” the defender told reporters in the mixed zone postmatch.

“It is true that in the last four years, we haven’t done it well in the season after winning the title.

“But after we didn’t qualify for the Champions League [last season], it is clear that now the target is to be competitive again in the Premier League, to be as close as possible to the title and try to fight for it.”

Despite a good win at Huddersfield Town tonight Chelsea boss Antonio Conte still believes is side cannot challenge in this season title race: the gap from Manchester City is too tough to reduce, as the Italian manager stated again after the game:

“We have 14 points less than Manchester City. They have won 15 and drew 1. In 17 games we lost four games, when you have a competitor like Manchester City that is winning it is very difficult to think you can win the title, it’s bullshit, bullshit. I would rather tell the truth than a good lie. Sometimes I can be too honest, I like to speak to the players and fans.

“It doesn’t mean that we are not going to try to catch them. This league is very difficult and to drop points. When you have a team that have 16 games and 15 wins and draw one game it is not simple to think in a positive. In the last 9 games we won seven games, drew and lost one games but despite this we are now 11 points and they play tomorrow so the distance might be 14 points.

“They are having a fantastic path but we must go game by game, there are six teams to fight for the title and the Champions League and we have to look to improve and have this type of game and I enjoyed to watch them play like this.”

Chelsea will not appeal David Luiz‘s red card against Arsenal, even if Blues boss Antonio Conte insists the tackle was not intentional, as the Brazilian fell before the horrendous tackle on Sead Kolasinac:

“I think the situation was very clear. It was a fall before the tackle but now it’s important to move on and to look at the next game,” Conte said in the press conference ahead of League Cup game against Nottingham Forest.

David Luiz will now miss three matches, including the top of the table clash against Manchester City in the end of the month.

Ex West Ham and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand claimed that he doesn’t see other teams as consistents as Chelsea in the Premier League:

“These boys are running away with it,’ the former English centre-back told BT Sport.

“There’s no one consistent enough to stay with them in the league.

“They’ve found a way of playing, a formula, an understanding of the manager’s ideas.

“I think he [Conte] has to take huge credit, the season before… terrible season, so far off the pace.

“He’s come in and, based on repetition, built an understanding of how he wants the team to play and the players are really putting it in, he’s run away with the league this year.”

Chelsea legend Petr Cech, now at Arsenal, is convinced his current team can challenge the Blues until the end in Premier League title race:

“There are not many games left to be played, and though Chelsea have a big advantage all we can do is make sure we keep winning our games.

“The table is very congested in the race for the Champions League positions, so this win is exactly what we needed.

“We need to be consistent, because we do have periods where we do well then other weeks when we lose games.

“We need to improve where we can improve and ensure we are ready for every game, because now every game will be like a final.”

Chelsea could face a potential point deduction following last week’s ugly scenes at the end of the Manchester City clash, sparked by Sergio Aguero’s horror challenge on David Luiz.

This could happen because the Blues were involved in this kind of episodes too many times in the past years.

When Antonio Conte was asked about this in his post-match press conference, he replied:

“Are you joking? If you’re involved in a situation and the fault is not yours, why must you pay? I don’t understand. My players tried to keep the calm. We are trying to improve in all aspects. You must be honest to understand when there is a fault of one team or both teams.

“In every game you fight a lot during the 90 minutes and then when the ref blows his whistle you finish. I don’t know what happened in the past but I know what’s happening in the present. My players tried to keep the calm.”

David Luiz had his say on Sergio Aguero‘s brutal tackle on him yesterday, an awful foul that could have seriously hurt the Brazilian defender, who said:

“I don’t like to publicise things. This is not part of the beautiful football.

“Aguero is an amazing player, he scores a lot, he wins a lot. It is better when you talk about Aguero to talk about good things rather than bad things.

“It is quite normal frustration when you don’t win the game and I don’t like to speak about negative things.

It is normal in football – when you win you be happy, when you lose you be sad.”
