Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek spoke after the Blues’ win over Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup second round at Stamford Bridge.

The 20-year-old played alongside Belgium international Michy Batshuayi as a striker and he spoke about his own performance during the game: “I think I did alright and in a position that is still a bit foreign to me, but I gave it my all and I am kind of satisfied with it,”

“We were 3-1 up but we made the game more complicated for ourselves. We wanted to come out and kill off the game but that didn’t happen so we had to dig in right to the end”.

“We said at the start that this was the game of Bristol Rovers’ lives and we have to match that in motivation, and we got to 3-1 up but a little lapse in concentration and they are back in the game so it is a lesson to be learned”.

“To win these games when you’re not playing too well on the ball you need to dig in and fight together and stick together. It shows the spirit of the team. Even though they have been tight games we are still winning and that is the sign of a good team. As a team we are really happy”.

Then, when asked about the season, he added: “There is no Champions League this season but we want to win trophies. We can concentrate on the Premier League and the cups as well. It is a minus not being in the Champions League but it is a plus in a way that we can focus on these two cups”.

About new manager Antonio Conte, Loftus-Cheek ended: “He is a very patient manager and he realises it is a new system and a new way he wants us to play, and he respects that it is not going to come overnight”.

“We are still getting used to it but we have done really well to win these three opening games, and we can only get better”.
