Sky Sport pundit Paul Merson expects Chelsea to draw against Leicester City on Monday night at King Power Stadium. However, the former Arsenal player has no doubt, that Chelsea upcoming match is a ,,must-win” for the Blues if they still have hopes of fighting for a good place at the end of the season in the Premier League.

Merson told Sky Sports:

”This is must-win for Chelsea. There are 14 points between them and the top four, but I think they need to be judged on how many points they are off Leicester.”

“They’re 18 off Leicester, but for me the Foxes are not going to be winning the league come May. If they come anywhere in the top four, it will be fourth place. So for Chelsea, Leicester are the side they need to chase down”

“We say every week Chelsea will win this game, win seven on the trot and be fine, but they did not look like winning against Bournemouth. They kept the ball forever and did not look like scoring.”

“This is a really, really hard game to judge. Chelsea haven’t really ripped anyone to shreds this season, although they did play well against Porto. I’ll go 2-2.”

“Of course, for every manager, they would all think of managing Manchester United.”

”I will continue to wait. If I don’t find a club with a good project, I can wait.”

“What will I do? Watching games, fishing, all these things.”

“But let us see next summer. I will not take a job in midseason, but I would like to work again next summer.”

“Of course, for every manager, they would all think of managing Manchester United.”

“I would like to come back in a club with a good project, but, of course, one that is competitive.”

“The Premier League is the best in the sense of atmosphere, ambience. It is also competitive, so I would like to come back, especially for the atmosphere.”

“I’m sure at the end of the season Chelsea will be in the top four. I still think they will make the Champions League. For now it is bad luck but when they start to win they will arrive.”

“I respect them a lot because I watched the match last night. They played very well with good concentration. They are used to doing this as they are the champions. Sooner or later they will start.

“It was good for Chelsea to win and now in two or three months everything will change. I’m sure they will be ready to fight.”

The Italian managed Chelsea between 2000 and 2004 and it was Mourinho who replaced him at Stamford Bridge. Asked about it, he answered:

”Chelsea for me means a lot because I worked there for four years. I’m very proud to have been their manager. But that’s an old story and now my focus is on Leicester,”

Controversial Chelsea ace Diego Costa confessed that he made a mistake when he threw a bib at Jose Mourinho during Chelsea clash against Tottenham at White Hart Lane. However, the Spaniard ensures that despite this incident, he has a great relationship with his Portuguese coach.

The 27-year-old returned to the starting XI during yesterday’s triumph over Porto and promotion to the next phase of the Champions League. Chelsea striker admitted that he needs to work on hiself and on his behavior.

Costa told Onda Cero:

“I have to improve a bit,”

“The start of the season has not been good for me — not in how I have played nor in goals.”

“I know I have to be better to go to Euro 2016 with Spain. I have to work hard and fight, but I know I have time to improve and I hope I will.”

”The bib [incident] is in the past. I made a mistake, but my relationship with Mourinho is amazing, we get on really well. There are things you need to control, but the bib thing was an impulse.”

“The truth is Chelsea haven’t been in a great moment, above all losing the other day at home [against Bournemouth]. Today it was important to win to make the fans happy and to recover our confidence.”

Asked about his possible return at Vicente Calderon, the Spaniard said:

“You never know, look where Filipe Luis is now,”

”Life takes plenty of twists and turns — I always wish Atletico the best and I always follow them, support them from afar.”

Porto manager Julen Lopetegui has praised his players for their the great effort they put during the defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge a result of which, the Portuguese team got eliminated from the Champions League.

Besides Chelsea for the next round of the competition got promoted Dynamo Kiev. The team that that was theoretically weaker than the Portuguese side, but still coach Lopetegui refused to criticise his players for their performances in the Champions League during this season.

Lopetegui told Sport TV:

“With 10 points normally that it is enough to qualify but we lost the previous match [to Kiev] and [the Chelsea game] was complicated,”

“We played against one of the best teams in the world on the counter-attack and we started better than them.”

“We had a plan but the goal changed everything. We wanted to stop their transitions but Chelsea became calmer and forced us to change.”

“Now we will compete in the Europa League. We will fight for another title.”

“The team made a titanic effort in the second half. It was a perfect backdrop for Chelsea but the team’s attitude in the second half was very good. They fought to the end and I have nothing to point out to them.”

“We had some physical problems. We have played several games in recent times.”

“We wanted to take control of the game and prevent their movement. We had a good opportunity from Brahimi at the beginning.”

Jose Mourinho has already started the mind games ahead of the Champions League last 16 draw on Monday. According to the Portuguese coach Chelsea are among the weakest side who qualified for the next phase of the tournament and and all the other teams hope to draw the Blues.

Mourinho said:

“I think everyone want to play us,”

”I think every second team wants to play us. They don’t want to play Barcelona, they don’t want to play Real Madrid, they don’t want to play Atletico [Madrid], they don’t want to play Bayern [Munich]. I think every team finishing second they want to get us, they want to get Zenit. We are the weakest.”

“What gives me confidence is the fact that we are playing ok in the last couple of months,”

“The results are not as good as the work we do every day or as good as the players are playing.”

“We would have had different results against Stoke, Tottenham and Bournemouth. The piece of luck that we had in our first goal – it is a great pass and a great move – but we are a bit lucky with the rebound. It is a great save from [Iker] Casillas. That little bit of luck we never get in the Premier league. A great decision by the official on the goal-line; we never get that in the Premier League.”

“The Premier League boss [Richard Scudamore] told me in an interview a few months ago that it would be good for the Premier League if Chelsea is now the champions,”

“But he didn’t say that it is good for the Premier League if we do not finish fourth.”

“While mathematically it is still possible let’s fight in every game for every point and see if it possible to finish fourth. To win the Champions League I think it is obvious that a team struggling so much like we are not obviously a candidate to win the Champions League.”

“But when we won in Porto in 2004 we were not candidates, when we won with Inter in 2010 we were not candidates. When when we were candidates we lost two semi-finals with Real Madrid and lost two semi-finals with Chelsea so you never know.”

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho admitted that his players did everything to win tonight, to advance to the next stage of the Champions League but above all to avoid playing in the Europa League.

Mourinho told BT Sport:

”The players were really committed to get a result, as much for their pride. They didn’t want to go to the Europa League and especially after the last defeat at home, a second successive defeat would have been an attack to their pride.”

”They were compact and always had initiative, they tried to win even when the draw would have been enough. They deserved to win.”

“We are not lucky in the Premier League. Luck is part of the game. In the Premier League every detail goes against us and it was a little attack to the players’ confidence. It was an important result for the players and the clubs. ”

“The supporters are unbelievable in their support towards me and I feel sorry I cannot give them more than I am giving them.”
