Danny Drinkwater

Simon Mignolet was the hero of these 45′ at Anfield saving three clear chances for Chelsea in five minutes in the middle of the first half: first on Eden Hazard, then on Danny Drinkwater and finally on Davide Zappacosta.

The Reds were dangerous only in the end of the first part with their star-man Mo Salah, whose shot was slightly wide.

Other 45 minutes to try to win this game for the Blues!

Speaking ahead of WBA game at Premier League restart after the international break Antonio Conte immediately gave an injury update:

Bathsuayi has a problem in his ankle, Musonda has a problem in his knee, Moses will be back next week.”

Asked if David Luiz is in this game squad after being left out in the clash against Manchester United, the Italian boss replied:

“Yes, he is in the squad, it was my decision to leave him out a couple of weeks ago,” Conte revealed.

He added: “I think the most important thing is to prepare the next game and to pay great attention, not to speak about a single player.”

Chelsea won the title at The Hawthorns last May, so to go back there must be a special feeling for Conte and his guys:

“It was a fantastic moment for me, for the players, for the club, for the fans.

“We won the league and it was great, I remember that moment very well and I am proud for what we did last season.

“Now we have to look at the present and this will be a really tough game because also last year WBA played a great game, two great games, because they were strong at Stamford Bridge as well. We want to try to continue to win.”

Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham are doing very well while on loan at Crystal Palace and Swansea, Conte was asked if it was the right decision to send them on loan instead of including them in this season first team squad:

“I think we are talking about two young players, they will be the future of Chelsea, it’s right for them to play regularly. I read RLC’s interview: this experience is important for him, for his development, for his maturity. It’s the same path that Christensen followed when he was loaned two seasons at Borussia Monchengladbach.”

About Danny Drinkwater‘s fitness he said:

“Against Manchester United he suffered a knock in his calf, he started to work with us only this week, he was intelligent to stop.

“I think this is not a great moment for Italy, for my country, to miss the World Cup after 56 years it’s a half disaster for us, because you know how important football is for Italy. I hope the federation will work to improve the situation.”

Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek impressed in his England debut last week and he is collecting many good performances in his current loan at Crystal Palace this season.

Next season Ruben Loftus-Cheek will make his way back to Stamford Bridge to play with Chelsea and Blues legend Pat Nevin believes the youngster must try to emulate what another Chelsea player is doing now after spending some seasons on loan.

Ruben for his part still has to muscle his way past Cesc Fabregas, N’Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater when he comes back to Stamford Bridge, and this will be no easy task”. – Nevin told Chelsea official website – “If however he continues to impress for England and is clearly the best of the bunch at Crystal Palace for the rest of the season, I am convinced he will get a chance. The perfect example for these two is Andreas Christensen. He played some first team football here, but he earned his stripes as well as made his mistakes playing with Borussia Moenchengladbach. They were playing not only in the Bundesliga but also the Champions League and when he won that club’s Player of the Year, it was clear he had shown he was good enough to be part of the Chelsea squad”.

Alvaro Morata was absolutely quick in recovering from a muscular problem suffered in the Premier League game against Manchester City just one month ago. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has praised the Spaniard for his ‘commitment and desire’: “I am happy with his commitment and desire, and will to fight. – he said – Don’t forget he is recovering from a muscular problem. I am very happy for his performance. A lot of time he recovered a very important ball in transition”.

Several players are still working hard to find the best shape: “During the game I try to give support to the players. Not only today. For us it is very important to overcome this period. We started this period with a lot of problems. Hazard with a surgery, he is an important player. Then with Pedro and two red cards, and injury with Kante and Moses, to recover Drinkwater: we faced a lot of problems”.

Chelsea reduced their gap on Tottenham Hotspur, going level on points with Arsenal sitting 4th in the league table. “We tried to do our best in every moment. – Conte added – All the other teams all win, Tottenham lost but the other top teams won”.

Antonio Conte admits the team are not going through a great period, with lots of injuries and issues to face.

The Italian manager and his staff have just one aim: to come out of this period in the best way possible:

“Our priority is it overcome this period because we are facing it with a lot of problems” said Conte yesterday while speaking to the press.

“I hope to have my players in good physical condition, all players, and then to face all competitions.

“I hope to do this very soon because Drinkwater is almost ready and Kante is at the stage almost to come back with us. The only problem we have to face, and we need more time with, is Moses“.

Conte explained why Kante’s absence had been so keenly felt.

“For sure it is not simple for us to play without N’Golo because he is an important player for us,” Conte said.

“Now the team is used to playing without him but I hope to see him back very soon with us.

“There are players with the same characteristics but N’Golo is a really good player, and he is becoming a top player.”

Conte explained also which issues he found in his first season in the UK:

“It was tougher at the start because to arrive in a new country, to adapt yourself with a new type of football, new language and new habit it wasn’t easy.

“I found a lot of trouble and last season I tried to solve these problems and I solved a lot of problems.

“But, don’t forget, last season we won, but not one person predicted this at the start of the season for our squad after our transfer window.

“We did a really fantastic job last season but now we have to try to continue in this way, continue to work and continue to try and solve the problems and create something important for the club.

“It is not easy. Some people think to win is easy, but it is not. You try to ask the winners if it is easy to win, it is a path and you have to follow this path and there is a lot of sacrifice, a lot of work, patience, a lot of things.”

Antonio Conte is confident that midfielder Danny Drinkwater will improve following his Chelsea debut at Stamford Bridge against Everton in the Carabao Cup last night.

With Kante sidelined but close to a return, the former Leicester City man could be a key player in Chelsea’s squad: “I think he has a lot of room for improvement, – Conte said after the game – I preferred to give him the opportunity to play from the start because he needs to play, to find the right tempo and rhythm of the game”.

“I knew I could risk something by playing him, but I think it was very positive for him to start the game and to know that now I can count on him for part of the next games.

Conte believes Drinkwater “will be 100 per cent fit after the international break”. However, he added: “We must have patience. We are also recovering N’Golo very well and this is good news for our midfield.”

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater made his debut with the Blues in the last game against Everton.

The England international told ChelseaTV: “The last few months? I don’t think they could have gone any worse. I have been trying to take the positives out of it. My calf feels good now but I was massively frustrated. The waiting game was killing me”.

Drinkwater suffered a calf injury in training after joining Chelsea on Deadline Day from Leicester City.

“It’s been good to watch the team and it has helped me to settle in as well. It has given me a feel for how they actually play. But the sooner I can get more involved now, the better for me.”

Even if Chelsea manager Antonio Conte declared yesterday to the Blues official website, that Danny Drinkwater was still injured, now it seems the midfielder Chelsea signed this summer from Leicester has been declared fit.

So Drinkwater himself can make his Chelsea debut tonight at Stamford Bridge vs Everton in the Carabao Cup last 16 match even if is highly improbable the new Blues signing will be included in the starting XI.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte confirmed three major injury blows for the Carabao Cup game against Everton.

The Italian coach revealed that summer signing Danny Drinkwater is still unavailable to make his debut due to a lingering calf injury.

Fellow midfielder N’Golo Kante remains sidelined with a hamstring problem suffered while on international duty with France earlier this month and wing-back Victor Moses is out with a similar issue.

“I think for the game against Everton, it is impossible to recover for Drinkwater,” Conte told Chelsea official website.

“Moses needs more time and so does Kante.”

Antonio Conte will probably have just one first team squad midfielder for tomorrow’s clash against Watford, as the Italian manager himself revealed during a press conference today maybe only Cesc Fabregas will be fully fit to play among the midfielders, as Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante are both still recovering from their long-term injuries and Tiemoué Bakayoko didn’t feel very well after the Champions League game against Roma:

“Honestly at the moment I cannot say nothing about the starting XI for tomorrow,” Conte told the press.

“I have many doubts, I have 24 hrs to recover some players, maybe Fabregas will be the only fit midfielder.

“For sure tomorrow the game will be very tough, because Watford are a good team, they got a good position in the table, but after two defeats we want to come back to win.

“It can happen to lose some games, after [the win against] Atletico we played a tough game after only two days, maybe this can be the only regret, when we played at Crystal Palace it was after international break, and then Roma after three days.”

Asked if he changed something in his training method respect to last season, Conte said:

“I don’t know about this, my method is the same of last season, when we won the league, we are working maybe 70% less in this season, that’s why we have troubles.

“We play every three days, so it’s impossible to work in technical and physical aspect like the past year.

“After two defeats in a row I am happy for the commitment and the efforts of my players, but if you ask me about the last results, I am not happy, no coach can be happy after two defeats and one draw.”

Conte was also asked if he can handle the pressure he’s under in this delicate moment of his Chelsea experience:

“I think every manager has to feel the pressure, I try to put all myself in my job, I am happy when I go to my house because I put myself 100% in my job.”

When asked if he was regretting replying to José Mourinho‘s comments ( “some manager always cry about injuries”) the Italian coach replied:

I don’t regret replying to him, every manager has to talk about his job, himself, his team, his players, not the others. Every coach has to focus on his own work, it’s the best way to work.”

And when the journalist insisted on a comment on this topic, Conte replied:

“For me this is a stupid issue, it’s funny you’re sot interested in it.”

Asked about Danny Drinkwater‘s recovery from his calf injury and if he could risk the former Leicester midfielder in the next games Conte said:

“Danny is progressing well, now he has started to work in some part of the sessions with us, now it’s important for him to improve his physical conditions, but he’s progressing well.

“First of all it’s important to recover him very well, if I play him I will have a not fit player and maybe he will pick up another injury, 40 days have already passed, but we must have more patience and wait the right moment.”

About N’Golo Kante’s recovery from his hamstring injury, Conte said:

“I hope to have him back very soon, before the inter nation break, he is progressing well, the scan was better than before, he has started to work, not with the group. Back with Man United? It could be an option, but if he is available before, like in the away game at Rome, I will be very happy.

“I think that we have to try everything to win the game, their effort and commitment was very good and positive against Manchester City and against Roma, it’s important to win, we’re working to try to win the next game.”

“Now our priority it’s to be focused and to go game by game, every opponent can be dangerous for different reasons, we have to go game by game to try to win the game and put ourselves in a better condition.

“When you have to play four competition this is the path you must follow, to play every game with the same players is a big problem, in this way it’s impossible to work well, the game is not training, it’s different.

“If you compare the situation with Tottenham last season, don’t forget that we lost a lot of big players, a lot of players that wrote the history of this club, we signed five players and we are trying to repeat something important, but it’s normal you have to pay something in this situation.”

Questioned if he regrets to play David Luiz in the midfield against Roma, Conte said:

“When you have the necessity to do this I am not happy, because I think every player has his own role, but I think sometimes you have to adapt and you must pay for this, it’s normal.”

On tomorrow’s rival, this what the Blues boss claimed:

“I think they are doing very well, they did a really good transfer market, I’m very happy for Pozzo family, I know them very well and they have great knowledge of football, but surely tomorrow I want to ready to beat them.”
