Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel revealed that he was scared when he first arrived at the Blues because of the stars he was sharing the dressing room with:

“I came into the dressing room that day literally shaking,” he recalls while he speaks to Chelsea official magazine.

“I saw the players that were in there – the likes of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Claude Makelele, Geremi, Michael Essien, Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko – it was crazy. And I was just 19.

“I was shaking the whole day because I couldn’t talk to any of them. I didn’t know what to say to guys like that. They were really nice guys, but it was scary. It can be tough coming into a dressing room like that as a younger player. You had to earn the right to be among them.”

Speaking about his playing style he said:

“I love doing my defensive duties, but at the same time I love having the ball and always trying to be available so we can play out from the back,’ he said.

“This is something we’ve talked about, something the manager has stressed – trying to play out from the back so we can always be in control of the game. I think doing this we have much more possession of the ball.

“I like having the ball and making the team play. When I was young, my natural position wasn’t as a defensive midfielder so maybe that gives me a bit of an edge.”

Chelsea legend Frankie Lampard spoke to the Mail on Sunday and revealed that he wondering if today’s the Blues got some real leaders in the dressing room:

I do worry about where the real personalities of the team are,” he claimed.

“To be a big team, you have to have big personalities.

“I don’t want to sound like I am harking back to the days of me and John (Terry) and Ashley Cole and Petr Cech and Didier Drogba but I do see a team now where John is the last mainstay of that identity.

“Maybe Chelsea are looking for a more beautiful way now. The club has been trying to push it down that route with the players they have recruited over the last four or five years.

“The problem is if you fall in the middle, somewhere between tough and beautiful. It’s nice football at times but it’s not that nice and it’s not really winning games. It’s not beautiful, beautiful stuff.

“They need to buy two or three big players. Because being 11th in the Premier League is ridiculous for Chelsea.”

Last season Lampard played for Manchester City prior to his move to current club New York City, so he gives his opinion also on Citizens’ next manager, Pep Guardiola:

They will be a huge force under Guardiola. I think, yes, Man City can push on in a massive way. He’s an innovator.

There are two geniuses: Jose Mourinho and him. What a great rivalry that will be if Jose goes to Old Trafford.”

Speaking about his future he said:

“I don’t know yet whether this will be my last year as a player – but whether it is or not, I don’t want to go out with a whimper.”

French publication L’Equipe has claimed that Didier Drogba has retired early to join Chelsea’s coaching staff.

The 37-year old, who had nine very successful years at Stamford Bridge, has been heavily linked with a coaching role at the club after the appointment of Guus Hiddink as interim coach.

Drogba is currently signed on with MLS side Montreal Impact, but L’Equipe has claimed that the Ivorian has ended his time in Canada after just six months.

Hiddink has already spoken of how he would welcome Drogba into his backroom team, stating that his addition would be “very good for any club.”

However, no official announcement has been made and if Drogba has retired, it is unknown what role he would take up with the Blues.

Blues keeper Thibaut Courtois would be very enthusiastic to see his ex team-mate Didier Drogba part of Hiddink‘s coaching staff.

The negotiations with Drogba’s current club, MLS’ Montreal Impact, have proven difficult since Blues legend remains under contract with them.

But there is still a hope the Didier and Impact can find a solution, so he could be free to re-join Chelsea, but this time not a player:

“I had a very good relationship with him last year. He was great for the dressing room and our team,” Courtois said about Drogba.

“If he comes back as a coach it will be a great addition to all the team.”

It seems Chelsea legend Didier Drogba is very close to get a role in the Blues backroom staff, as reports coming from Canada says his current team, Montreal Impact, are looking for a striker to replace him.

Also Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink spoke about this option, stating he would prefer him to work close to the squad and the other players at the training ground:

“A few days ago before the Sunderland game I said that those rare kind of former players with this status would be very good for any club to have,” Hiddink told reporters.

“Especially him because he’s a Chelsea legend, but for the moment we have to respect his contract with Montreal.

“It depends on the player himself, you need to give them time and opportunities to find out what the best is for them.

“It may be on the coaching staff or maybe as an ambassador, but that is too official and functional for me.

“They need to go into the squad and help players with their experience.

“I am not in favour of a big ambassador role – travelling round the world with a tie on. They must give their huge experience to help especially the young kids and helping older ones with problems in their career.”

Chelsea’s new interim manager Guus Hiddink has said that he is keen to involve Didier Drogba in his club set-up.

The former Chelsea striker watched the Blues’ 3-1 win over Sunderland alongside Hiddink, with the Ivorian strongly tipped to join the backroom team at Stamford Bridge.

We would like to get him involved,” Hiddink told Fox Sports.

However, the Dutchman has realised that Drogba’s current contract situation with MLS side Montreal Impact could cause an issue.

It is believed Drogba may call time on his playing days, and will focus on his coaching badges to take up a senior role at Chelsea.

He [Drogba] still has a contract with Montreal in the MLS, even though it is close season for them now,” the Dutchman said.

We want to get important players involved with the club they care about.

“Drogba’s heart is with Chelsea.”
