Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri believes the 3-0 against Dynamo Kiev at Stamford Bridge in the first-leg of Europa League last-16 ‘is a good result’ as the Blues have a comfortable lead ahead of their trip to Ukraine next week.

Speaking at a press conference after the game, the Italian added: “We were able to not concede, and to not concede a goal at home is very important in this competition. We could have scored more, especially in the first half”.

“Now we have to be careful. We have to go there with a very good level of application and determination if we want to qualify”.

Sarri said: “If you concede a goal you can go mentally in trouble. We have to go there with the right level of attention”.

“He played very well, also in the defensive phase. He missed two or three goals but he played a very good match”.

Chelsea‘s manager Maurizio Sarri can’t be happy with the result of the Carabao Cup‘s semifinal first leg vs Tottenham as the Spurs defeated the Blues 1-0.

On the other hand, however, the Italian praises his team for their performance: “We deserved more because in this match we played better than the opponents,” Sarri assessed. “We were in control of the match and defended well against a team dangerous in the offensive phase, so we deserved more. We played about 70 balls in the opposition box against 11 balls of Tottenham in our box, 18 shots against seven I think, five goal opportunities against two, so we deserve more. So I am really disappointed with the result but very happy with the performance, one of the most important of the season from my team.”

The performance was good because Chelsea had a different approach from the Premier League‘s game in November: “Because we played with a very good level of application and determination, with the head and with the soul, and we played this way with continuity for 95 minutes”. Sarri went on. “Usually we have defended very well for 60 minutes and then we have had problems with the last 15, 20, 30 minutes. This time the level of application was the same for 95 minutes so I am very happy with this.”

So, even if Chelsea lost the first leg, the team can win the second leg at Stamford Bridge and move on to the Carabao Cup final: “Chelsea v Tottenham is a very difficult match and also for them, so it will not be easy to win at Stamford Bridge but after this performance, if we are able to play on the same level I think that we can do it.” Sarri explained.

Harry Kane’s VAR penalty gives Spurs adavantage after League Cup first leg semifinal played at Wembley tonight, as Tottenham win 1-0 over Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a VAR decision when Kane, adjudged to have been offside, raced through on goal before being upended by Kepa.

Referee Michael Owen wanted the offside call to be checked and once it was confirmed that the English forward was actually level with play the decision to award the spot-kick was an easy one and the English international gave his team the lead.

Chelsea came out strongly at the start of the second half, with Ngolo Kante testing Paulo Gazzaniga from distance, while Andreas Christensen missed a goal from close range.

Despite plenty of possession in the second part of the game, the Blues could not find a way to beat Gazzaniga, pointing out again the lack of a real striker upfront for Sarri’s lads.

Tomorrow Chelsea will face Tottenham at Wembley in the Carabao Cup semifinal’s first leg.

The Blues and the Spurs have already met in the Premier League when Mauricio Pochettino‘s side defeated Chelsea 3-1. Things have to be different tomorrow night as Maurizio Sarri explained during his pre-game press conference.

We need to approach this match in another way because we lost that way in the first 15 minutes”. the Italian manager said. “They were more aggressive and determined than us. We know if the approach is the same then there’s no solution for us. I want to speak before about this”

The Blues’ approach to the game will be the most important thing, but it won’t be the only thing Sarri is going to change: “We will change tactics, I think.” he added.

After the 2-2 in Premier League ten days ago, Arsenal and Chelsea got another draw tonight, but this time without goals.

After the game Antonio Conte was asked if the teams, who will meet again in two weeks, are too familiar:

“To play three times in three weeks is very strange,” the Italian manager claimed.

“It is more simple to prepare the game because you know the team and the way they are playing. When you reach the QF or SF of this trophy in England you must be prepared to face big teams.”

Asked if Arsenal, who will play the second leg at home, are favourites, the Blues boss replied:

“I don’t think so. We have the same possibilities to go through to the final. Not to concede could be very important for the second leg. To play at the Emirates is not easy or simple. We deserved to be in the semi-final and be very happy to do this.”

For the second consecutive time, Chelsea ended a game with a goalless draw.

For this reason, the Blues manager, Antonio Conte, even if satisfied with some aspects of his team’s performance, believes Chelsea must improve in the situations when they can score a goal.

For sure I think it would be better to win the game, also 1-0. The positive things were that we didn’t concede and when you play a semi-final with two legs and not concede at home can be important. We tried to win, shot 20 times, created chances but couldn’t take them. In the last period we must be more clinical, if you don’t score the game can finish in a draw. After Norwich it is the second 0-0 in a row. We have to improve on the training pitch in this situation.” Conte said, “You must be worried if you don’t create and it is difficult not to score. Every game we create chances, this season we might be a bit unlucky, but haven’t taken the chances. The speech is not for the strikers, Christensen had two fantastic chances to score. It is not just the strikers, you have to take chances. The semi-final it is important to take your chances”
