Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta made his debut in the Blues’ pre-season in the friendly game vs Inter Milan played on Saturday.

The Spanish player scored the last penalty and gave Chelsea the win: “We ended with a draw so obviously it was important to win the penalty shoot-out and we did it so we are happy,’” Azpilicueta told Chelsea official website. “We are improving and we have to keep learning in the games that we have on Wednesday (against Arsenal) and then on Sunday against Manchester City. We have to keep working hard.”

Azpilicueta played the second-half at right-back: In the national team I sometimes play there and it’s a position I’ve played in for most of my career, maybe not so much with Chelsea because I’ve played more on the left or at centre-back, but as I’ve always said, I try to adapt,” Azpilicueta explained. “I know that every time I play in a different position I want to improve and to prove myself, but the most important thing is to give everything for the team.”

Then Azpilicueta revealed to the club official website his first impressions on the new “Sarri era” at Stamford Bridge: “It’s been really good since the first day,” he said. “We’ve been learning his methods and I think the team looks better with every minute. We know we can still improve, we have room for improvement and we want to work on that aspect. We know we don’t have a lot of time to prepare for it [the new season] so we have to work hard in every training session and in every game to pick up the movements we want to do. I think we saw a good team against Inter Milan and we have to play collectively to get the results.”

Victor Moses and former Chelsea star Mikel John Obi were selected in Nigeria’s XI to face England at Wembley on Saturday, while defender Kenneth Omeruo came off the bench in the second period.

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill broke the deadlock with a fine header before Harry Kane doubled the score before halftime. Arsenal star Iwobi pulled one back for Super Eagles but England were able to see out the win in their first warm-up friendly ahead of World Cup 2018 in Russia.

Cahill said after the game: “We played against a good team, they are a strong side having players all around Europe as well as in the Premier League. In the second half they changed and we had to adapt to the change. It took 10 minutes, which I think is probably something we will touch upon this week. We saw the game out and we won the game.

Cahill also backed Manchester City star Raheem Sterling, who was booked for diving in the second half: “Raheem has been fantastic with it all, he manages that situation very, very well.
