Chelsea failed to gain the top spot in the Champions League group stage after drawing with Atletico Madrid tonight at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will now face one of the winners of the other groups, but Chelsea manager Antonio Conte doesn’t seem worried by this perspective.

“This is a fantastic competition, this is the best tournament. If you want to go through, if you want to try to be protagonists in this tournament, you must be ready to face the best teams. Our opponent won’t be happy to play against us.”

Conte, hovewer, believes Chelsea and other Premier League teams may have more difficulties in the final stages of the Champions League: “Don’t forget here this season is very tough” – Conte added -. “You have to play a lot of games, but when you arrive at the final stage to play for quarter-finals, semi-finals the English teams have a lot of games in their legs. For this reason I think it could be problematic to win.”

After his side’s draw vs Atletico Madrid tonight at Stamford Bridge Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is satisfied with the Blues’ performance except for one aspect.

I think tonight it was a good game and a good performance,” – Conte said. – “I think we deserved to win the game because we had so many chances to score and you have to try to take them. Instead, their goalkeeper was I think their best player and in other circumstances could be more accurate. But at the same time, we conceded a goal and we have to improve because after a corner there were a lot of mistakes. When you play this type of game the defence is very important. We had the strength to draw and to try to win the game. We must be pleased because it was a really tough group.”

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill belives Antonio Conte‘s side deserved to defeat Atletico Madrid tonight in their last game of Champions League‘s group stage.

“We more than deserved the win, we had some fantastic chances,” – Cahill told BT Sport. – “How have we not won? We should have won. You can pick holes in any goal you concede but overall our performance was good. Jan Oblak was fantastic today, he’s had an amazing game.”

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes tonight’s draw vs Atletico Madrid could make more difficult the Blues’ road in the Champions League: in the last 16 stage, Antonio Conte‘s side will now face one of the winners of the other groups.

“The story of the night is the chances that Chelsea squandered in the second half”. – Lampard told BT Sport – “It was a competent display. In the first half they were OK, in the second half they were OK again and responded well to going one down. But when you create four or five guilt-edged chances, that’s what you’re going to rely on. When that draw comes out, if they get one of the bigger teams, they could look back and regret tonight.”

Tomorrow night Chelsea will face Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge in their last Champions League group stage match.

The Blues have already earned a spot in the Last 16 of the competition, but they want to defeat the Spanish side in order to secure themselves also the top place in the group’s table.

I think this game is important because we are playing against Atletico Madrid and they have shown in the past to be an important team in this tournament,” – manager Antonio Conte told Chelsea official website –  “Now there is a risk they will be eliminated, but we have to play a good game, to improve our confidence, and because we want to reach the first position in our group. But if you arrive first, you could then get teams like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Juventus. It doesn’t change a lot if you arrive first or second. The most important thing is to reach the next stage, but for our mission and our confidence, it would be right to win and arrive first.”
