Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is confident his squad have bounced back from the recent disappointing results and remain in the battle for a top-four finish in the Premier League table.

Goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho secured a vital away win against Fulham earlier in the afternoon.

The Blues are currently 6th with a game in hand, which means they could climb up the table up to the 3rd place should they beat Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking after the game, Sarri said: “We had a great opportunity because we were five points from the top four but with two matches in hand. And now it’s two points. We are trying to involve Tottenham in the fight, and now I think they are involved. Better for four teams for two places than three for one”.

“We will have to fight until the last minute in the last match. But we are fighting and in the last four matches we did well. A minimum of consistency has arrived, but we have to continue”.

He added: “We played very well for 60 minutes. We could have killed the match with a third goal. We didn’t kill the match and then in the last 20, 25 minutes we were very tired, physically but also mentally”.

“In seven days we played 120 minutes in a difficult match against City, we played 90 very expensive minutes against Tottenham, and today a very important derby against a team with a new coach. It was a very difficult match”.

“So very good for 60 minutes, then very tired, but it was a normal reaction to our seven days”.

Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho both scored as Chelsea beat Fulham at Craven Cottage earlier this afternoon.

The Argentine striker opened the scoring in the 20th minute, before Cottagers‘ defender Callum Chambers leveled up the score just 8 minutes later. Jorginho put Chelsea in front again with less than 15 minutes left to go in the first half with a curled shot into the top corner. Gonzalo Higuain also had a clear chance to extend the lead before the halftime whistle.

Restored goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga denied a certain goal close to the end of the game and Maurizio Sarri enjoys the first Premier League away win in 2019.

The first game of Scott Parker in charge at Fulham ended up in defeat after the former Chelsea midfielder replaced Claudio Raneri as caretaker manager.

The Blues remain sixth on the league table, with still one game in hand (against Brighton) getting closer to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur following their 1-1 draw in the North London Derby earlier on Saturday.

FULHAM (4-2-3-1): Rico; Odoi, Nordtveit, Ream, Bryan; Chambers, McDonald (Anguissa 62′); Babel (Ayite 71′), Cairney (Vietto 80′), Sessegnon; Mitrovic

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri spoke ahead of today’s clash between the Blues and Manchester City, who bounced back from their unexpected defeat at Newcastle with two comfortable wins against Arsenal and Everton last time out.

The Italian boss, speaking at a press conference, said: “You know very well that the midfield of Manchester City is one of the best in the world, with Fernandinho, De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, David Silva”

“Technically I think they have the best midfield in Europe at the moment so it will be very difficult to be in control of the match, but I think the match is more than just the strikers”.

Sarri added: “They are able to play if you can stop Fernandinho and I think we are able to play also if you stop Jorginho. We have options. Maybe they have more options than us because they have worked on this for three seasons, but I remember in Naples it wasn’t a big problem if there was a man on Jorginho, so I hope it will be the same here in the future”.

“Of course, we have another striker, but we can make other decisions and maybe we will play with a false nine. I have to decide, the situation is not unlike in the other matches”.

On his rival Pep Guardiola: “I expect his team to always want to be in control of the match and always be in possession of the ball, and they are able to do it so it is a very difficult match”.

“We are used to having the ball possession and today it will be very difficult, so maybe we will have to defend lower. We will try to play our football, but if they are able to play their football, of course you have to stay lower. In the first match, they were able to press us in our half, it wasn’t a choice, it was a necessity and I think this match will be the same.

“We were lucky to score and then in the second half, especially in the first 20 or 25 minutes of the half, they gave us spaces, so it was a little bit easier”.

Chelsea are set to complete a move to sign Gonzalo Higuain on loan until the end of current season, according to reports in Italy.

The Juventus loanee will reportedly join the Premier League side with an option to extend the deal for another 12 months.

Higuain, who’s currently on loan with AC Milan, came off the bench in today’s defeat against Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana.

The former SSC Napoli star is expected to undergo a medical with Chelsea in the next few hours before completing his reunion with Maurizio Sarri.

Alvaro Morata is edging closer to a move to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid, while Michy Batshuayi‘s move to AS Monaco is stalling as the Belgian striker has been offered to the Rossoneri to replace Higuain.
