Stoke City have sacked manager Mark Hughes following the really slow start to the season so far (just two wins in the last twelve Premier League games) and tonight’s FA Cup third-round defeat against League Two side Coventry City.

Hughes himself said after the game: “It is disappointing because it is the same things happening week in week out, and it isn’t down to the fact that we aren’t trying to rectify them”.

An official statement from the club read: “Stoke City can confirm that the contract of manager Mark Hughes has been terminated with immediate effect”.

On-loan Chelsea striker Victor Moses is scheduled to make a return to Chelsea at the end of the current season.

The Nigerian is currently on-loan at Stoke City.

But, the 24-year-old stated that although he’s loved his time with Potters. he isn’t considering another year with the Staffordshire side. This is despite Mark Hughes stating that he would love it if Moses stayed at the Britannia Stadium.

“I just want to help Stoke as best as I can to finish as high as I can. As I’ve said before, I’m still a Chelsea player.

“I’m here to do a professional job for Stoke and will do my best to help them finish in the top eight. That’s my aim.

“It’s been nice to hear the manager say he’d like me to stay. He’s a great manager and he’s done well for this club.”

He added: “Before I came here I spoke to him and it looked like the club was heading in the right direction. That’s the main reason I came here on loan. I’m enjoying my football here and the style of play suits me.”

Moses has made 22 appearances for Stoke this season, scoring four goals in the process. He has also been on-loan to Liverpool since he signed for Chelsea for £9 million in 2012.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes reflects on today’s performance against Chelsea. He said:

“We weren’t really into the game and in terms of retaining the ball, Chelsea put a lot of pressure, I thought we were much better in the second half It was difficult to go back into the game.”

“Adam had a great vision seeing the keeper off the line. we had gone up at 1-1 and we were happy after that and in the second half there was still pressure, and they get the second goal.”

“In the end Chelsea were quite happy. They have experience of seeing games out and management.”

“So in the end I thought, in the second half we were much better, we showed more belief in what we do.”

“We created the penalty for them, and mistakes and distribution of the ball cost us, we are not going to criticise either of the guys. It happens and we got to pick ourselves up and go again.”

Charlie Adam’s wonder strike caught practically everyone in Stamford Bridge by surprise, none less than Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. But Hughes was one of the few who wasn’t as shocked:

“He was going for goal initially, and he’s got the capability. Credit to him for seeing the keeper off his line and he’s dispatched it so fantastic goal. Shame after the 1-1 we couldn’t capitalise and we made one more mistake that cost us the game.”
