Manchester City defender John Stones is pleased after being selected in Gareth Southgate‘s 23-man squad to face Malta and believes that ‘playing with an experienced player as Gary Cahill is good’.

Stones, when asked about his partnership with Chelsea defender Gary Cahill, told medias: “I’d like to continue playing with him”.

“Whether it’s Phil Jagielka, Chris Smalling, sometimes you’re not going to play and watching from the sidelines, watching those guys, trying to improve off them I suppose. They’ve been here, got a lot of caps, played a lot of games for club as well.

Then he added: “Whatever partnership plays for England is always a strong one because the training we do and how we work in training is always different combinations so we all know how each other play.”

It is understood Chelsea repeatedly tried to land Stones to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte targeted both Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson and Burnley star Michael Keane as potential replacements given that captain John Terry nears the end of career, according to The Daily Mail.

Ben Gibson

Gibson was called up in the England U21 23-man squad to play the U21 Euros in 2015, while Keane has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League champions Leicester City this summer.

The Foxes reportedly placed a £17m bid to seal his signature, but Burnley are comparing his fee to that of new Manchester City signing John Stones.

Now it’s official: after including him in the Champions League playoff squad-list, Manchester City announced the signing of John Stones from Everton.

The centre-back signs until 2022: the fee of the transfer is still undisclosed, but it was rumoured that the Toffees wanted £ 60m for their ex player.

Chelsea tried to sign him last summer but Everton rejected three bids by the Blues: the last one believed to be £40m, causing frustration in manager José Mourinho that was already undergoing hard times in the beginning of the last season.

The Stamford Bridge outfit made another attempt so sign Stones this summer, but the Toffees raised his fee again, until Manchester City offered what they have been expecting for two years.

Manchester City new boss Pep Guardiola spoke about the transfer window targets for his team and, when asked over Chelsea target John Stones, said: “Stones? He is an Everton player but everybody knows we will try to sign him.”

It is understood the Citizens are leading the race to sign the Everton centre-back, who has been heavily linked also with a move to Chelsea and Manchester United.

Manchester City are keen on Everton star John Stones and are said to be confident they will win the race to sign the 22-year-old, according to the Sun.

Also Chelsea and Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move to sign the England international, who is currently playing the Euros.

New Citizens manager Pep Guardiola is ready to bid £50m for the centre-back and £30m for Schalke sensation Leroy Sane.

Chelsea are reportedly lining up a summer move for Everton superstars Romelu Lukaku and John Stones, according to Belgian newspaper HLN.

The paper claim the negotiations to sign the duo will be “difficult and tough” and this is the reason why the Blues have started them so early.

Lukaku might leave Goodison Park with Paris St. Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus also reportedly keen on him, after his father confirmed his son is going to chose his new club before Euro2016.

Stones is reportedly eager to move from Everton to another Premier League side, with Manchester City and Chelsea interested in the highly rated centre-back.

Gary Cahill missed England first training session towards EURO 2016.

The Three Lions are playing a friendly game against Turkey next Sunday and the Chelsea centre-back was one of those who sat out of today’s training session.

Cahill had picked up ‘a knock’ playing for Chelsea against Leicester last Sunday but it seemed it wasn’t anything too serious.

England coach Roy Hodgson said Eric Dier could easily be used as a central defender too, and it seems the Spurs defensive midfielder will start along with John Stones against Turkey if Cahill will be injured, as Chris Smalling will play the FA Cup final with Manchester United this Saturday.

Paul Merson, speaking about Chelsea‘s plans for the future, claimed he believes Antonio Conte has put Everton centre-back John Stones on top of his whishlist in view of the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old centre-half has been selected in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2016 and last summer the Toffees rejected several bids from Chelsea, since the Blues were already reportedly keen on him.

Merson told Sky Sports: “I see Stones going to Chelsea personally,”

“I think the way Conte plays with a back three, there’s nobody better in Europe that could play in the middle of a three than Stones. I don’t think there will be anybody better.”

Manchester City are looking for a defender with a bright future ahead and in the last days they were linked to Everton defender John Stones.

Stones has been a Chelsea target for at least one year but the Blues didn’t succeed to sign him despite several attempts in the last transfer windows.

The Toffees rejected three bids from Chelsea last summer, including a last one of £40m, but now they seem keen to accept the same offer from Citizens.

Times football writer Martin Hardy claims Chelsea has not to do a revolution in their squad next summer.

According to him it’s important to keep a striker like Diego Costa:

He has still scored 15 goals this season and fought his way back after a poor start, a bit like Chelsea,” said The Times’ journalist.

“If you were the incoming manager of Chelsea, you would want a centre forward who knows how to play the English game and can guarantee you some goals.

“So that seems like a no-brainer to keep him. You obviously need to add some new players in that squad desperately. They need to be a bit more dynamic.

“Do you rescue Hazard or kind of cast him aside? These are all questions and decisions that he [Conte] has to make fairly quickly. But it needs someone else apart from Costa as well.

“But as I said, you would want to keep him.”

Hardy thinks Chelsea will only be looking to sign “three or four” new players this summer:

“Well you would probably get a cut-price John Stones this summer, so that is the first one.

“You would then want to buy a proper world-class centre forward and maybe someone who could dictate the game as well.

“So it is always three or four, is it not? Three or four added to Chelsea, and you would be saying – which you would probably say anyway, they should be challenging for the top six – and that might get them back into the top four.

“And then this season becomes the blip that they hope it was.”
