Begovic 6- Didn’t have a great deal to do but played well when called upon.

Kenedy 7.5- Looked very bright throughout and dangerous when he got forward.

Terry 7- Commanded the defence relatively well but still some uncertainty.

Zouma 7.5- Looked assured throughout and made a number of good interventions.

Ivanovic 7- Looks better than he did before injury.

Fabregas 7- An improvement but still too slow on the ball at times.

Matic 7- Played well in both the defensive and offensive aspects of his game.

Willian 8- Very good. Played with energy, put his set pieces in accurately and made a fantastic assist for the goal.

Hazard 8- Like others this was a very good showing and he is getting closer to his best.

Pedro 7.5- Perhaps his best showing in a Chelsea shirts. He was bright and eager to run at defenders when with the ball, did well to make space for Costa for the goal.

Costa 7- Scored a very good goal to show everyone what he is capable of at his best, but there were still moments of frustration as he didn’t run into the box at the right time and went down too easily in the fist half.

Substitutes:

Oscar 6- Came on for Pedro late on, looked bright.

Ramires N/A- Came on far too late, didn’t see much of the ball.

Azpilicueta N/A- Same as above.

Manager:

Jose Mourinho 7.5- The team played much better than it has done at most points this season and in the end their patience paid off with good and quick thinking from a number of players. He didn’t panic when the team’s approach didn’t initially work and was able to leave substitutions for cover purposes late on.

Chelsea are in pole position to sign Juventus full-back Kwadwo Asamoah, but face competition from Arsenal, according to reports in Italy today.

Chelsea are in need of a left-back with the sale of Filipe Luis, probably back to Atletico Madrid, imminent. ChelseaNews24 have reported in recent days that the English champions might use the Brazil international as part of a deal to sign either Antoinne Griezmann or Arda Turan from the Atletico, but should he leave it would leave a space free on Chelsea’s defensive left.

Cesar Azpilicueta played with distinction in that position for much of last season; the Spain international was the main reason Luis featured so little in Jose Mourinho’s side. Not being naturally left-footed means that he could sometimes find himself exposed, the home game with Manchester City being the foremost example, so having a naturally left-footed player on that side would give the team more balance. The signing of Asamoah would also give Jose Mourinho depth at left-back.

Asamoah missed much of last season with a knee injury as Juventus won the league and cup double but just missed out on the Champions League, losing 3-1 to Barcelona. The 26-year-old is also a target for Arsenal; it is almost certain that the Gooners will secure the signing of Chelsea second choice goalkeeper Petr Cech this week.

Bamford was hugely impressive last season

Newcastle United still believe it is possible to persuade Chelsea youngster Patrick Bamford to join their ranks, despite being turned down by the 21-year old last week.

ChelseaNews24 reported last week that Bamford, who won the Championship’s Young Player of the Year award for his haul of 17 goals for Middlesbrough last season, had rejected the chance to spend next season on loan at St James’ Park in the hope of forcing his way into Jose Mourinho’s first team.

Newcastle United have been undeterred and are hoping to get Bamford even if it means taking him on a permanent deal for £8 million. The Magpies are trying to strengthen their attack after only just avoiding relegation last season. They have appointed ex-England manager Steve McClaren as their new head coach and have been liked with a number of players, including Charlie Austin, who Chelsea are also interested in.

Cuadrado when he joined Chelsea...only seven months ago!

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Juan Cuadrado is to stay at Stamford Bridge this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Cuadrado joined Chelsea from Serie A club Fiorentina for £27 million in last January’s transfer window but has failed to get a run in the team, his rare appearances often coming from the bench. He has also not scored a single goal since arriving at Stamford Bridge leaving some to think that his Chelsea career will be as short as it has been fruitless; the Colombian has been linked with many clubs.

It now appears, however, that Mourinho, who led Chelsea to their first Premiership title since 2010 last season, has decided that all offers are to be refused and that Cuadrado is to be given the chance to show his quality next season.
