Chelsea will face Man City in the Carabao Cup final after beating Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. The first-leg at Wembley Stadium was bittersweet for Blues as a VAR-assisted penalty gave Spurs the lead on aggregate.

Then Eric Dier smashed the ball just over the bar, Kepa Arrizabalaga deflected Lucas Moura’s effort from the spot, while Chelsea players were able to convert every penalty (Willian, Azpilicueta, Jorginho and David Luiz).

Chelsea get a vital win at Selhurst Park after beating London rivals Crystal Palace thanks to N’Golo Kante‘s  in the 51st minute.

The Blues had three clear chances to break the deadlock in the first half as Willian hit the post from a free-kick before Ross Barkley tried to beat Guaita with an acrobatic effort which goes on the woodwork again. The Brazilian winger had another chance, but his fine strike from a long range is deflected by the keeper.

Chelsea take the lead earlier in the second period when David Luiz assists N’Golo Kante, who picks the ball down and scores to put Maurizio Sarri‘s men in front in South London.

Olivier Giroud had two goals denied due to offside and was replaced by Alvaro Morata after picking-up an injury, however Kante’s mark ensures the Blues end 2018 with a win and 43 points. Tottenham Hotspur, who currently sitting 2nd in the Premier League table, are just 2 points above Chelsea after losing at Wembley Stadium against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

CRYSTAL PALACE (4-3-3) – Guaita; Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, Van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Kouyate (Meyer 79′), McArthur; Townsend, Zaha, Schlupp (Wickham 69′)

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante scored his second goal in the Premier League 2018/19 against Man City, after putting his mark in the Blues’ win against Huddersfield Town on MatchDay 1 earlier in August.

The Frenchman, who has recently put the pen to paper on a new contract with Chelsea until June 2023, told the club’s official website: “The most important thing is to give my best on the pitch.”

“I am happy when I can be on the scoresheet and to have scored my second goal of the season. Sometimes I have chances in this position to score. I reacted, got there and had a shot”.

Kante added: “We had some difficult moments but we were able to suffer together and make the effort together, and after we were rewarded with two goals”.

“We are happy with the win. It’s a good feeling. I think they are the best team in England. It was important to react after the defeat on Wednesday. We did it the right way and we need to continue like this in the next games”.

CHELSEA (4 3 3) Kepa, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Willian, Hazard, Morata

EVERTON (4 2 3 1) Pickford, Coleman, Digne, Mina, Keane, Gueye, Andre Gomes, Sigurdsson, Walcott, Bernard, Richarlison

FIRST HALF – Chelsea and Everton produced a vivid first half at Stamford Bridge so far. The visitors had an early chance (Bernard’s effort goes wide), while Marcos Alonso went close to opening the score with a fine volley from the left of the six-yard box, which was deflected by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Chelsea’s midfield duo Jorginho and Kante was booked before both Bernard and Rudiger were shown a yellow card following a controversial quarrel behind the referee’s back. The German international went down touching his face. Also Everton defender Yerry Mina, who’s making his first start for Everton today at Stamford Bridge, was booked earlier.

SECOND HALF – The Blues were denied twice by the woodwork, Morata had a goal disallowed for offside while the visitors defending style had a successful effect. Marco Silva brought in defender Jagielka to stop Chelsea’s efforts. Everton goalkeeper Pickford (time wasting), as well as Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata (dissent), were both booked in the second period. Maurizio Sarri‘s choices Pedro and Ross Barkley failed to make an impact and the lads miss the chance to go top of the table ahead of Manchester derby.
