Thibaut Courtois has confirmed Chelsea board could not stop the move of Serbian star Nemanja Matic to Manchester United, as the midfielder asked to leave in the summer.

The Belgian star told The Independent: “If a player nowadays wants to go to a team, then he has – I don’t want to say the power – but if he has a strong will to leave and join another team then it is hard for the club,”

“You cannot just ignore him and say ‘you cannot leave’ because then you have a disappointed player who won’t play at his best”.

“So obviously for us you give a player to another big team, but they are choices that are made in football and we have some quality midfielder, so I hope we can show on Sunday that we are better.”

Manchester United has signed Matic from Chelsea on a £40m move and the midfielder put the pen to paper on a three-year-deal.

“We try to make them feel good quickly and to understand how we play, how we train. I think they did very well. Bakayoko scored his first goal. Zappacosta scored his first goal and it is good for them and good for us. We need everyone this month.”

Bournemouth star Jack Wilshere, who faced Chelsea on Boxing Day clash at Stamford Bridge, admitted that the Blues “look like champions at the minute”.

“For me, right now, they’re the best team in the league” he told reporters just after the game, according to reports in the Evening Standard.

“They’ve found this new formation that works for them, – Wilshere added – I’ve always thought it’s a tough place to come anyway. I’ve been here a few times with Arsenal, and we’ve only won once, but they’re more ruthless now”.

Then, speaking about the 3-0 defeat last time out, the Arsenal loanee ended: “They know what the job in hand is. They go out there and – week in, week out – change their gameplan depending on who they play. That’s the sign of a top team. They’ve got a structure with Matic and Fabregas holding in there, and players like Hazard and Willian, who were both different class against us.”
