Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has confirmed he is not expected to play for England national team following 8 years, 5 goals and 60 caps earned with the Three Lions.

Cahill, speaking in an interview which is available on “5th Stand official app”, told Chelsea’s official website: “I think it’s time that I take a step back now. It’s the right moment to do that. I’ve been hugely proud of what I’ve achieved, over 60 caps, I’ve captained my country on a few occasions, which has been a huge honour and something I’ve been really proud of”.

“At the same time, in your football career you never want to shut a door completely, I’ve been hugely honoured to play for my country and if I’m ever needed, I’m there”.

Speaking after Chelsea’s away win at Newcastle on Sunday, Blues’ boss Maurizio Sarri has confirmed Cahill still needs more time to get the best shape and start to be a regular starter for the club.

Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel said the Italian manager was among the reasons why he left Stamford Bridge earlier last season.

Antonio Conte told reporters the Nigerian midfielder was keen on a move to Chinese Super League to make a new experience following 11 years with the Blues.

However, Mikel himself believes Conte’s lack of respect and appreciation towards ‘players who have been there before and who made this club what it is today’ made the difference in his decision to leave the West London club in 2017.

Speaking ahead of international friendly game against England National team at Wembley, he said: “Definitely it was the right time [to leave] because when you have a manager who… you have to come in whoever you are – manager or player – there are people who have been there before who made this club what it is today”.

“Chelsea was nowhere near what it is 10, 15 years ago. There are players that build and build and build, then it’s all about respect. When you don’t get that from  you deal with it, you move on.

“My connection with the club has not changed because of the manager or because of a certain person. My relationship with the club remains. I am a blue and I want to remain that way for years and years to come”.

Obi Mikel spoke out also on Roman Abramovich: “It doesn’t concern me at all. The club is in really good hands, run by Marina [Granovskaia] now. She loves the club. I think she makes decisions purely on the betterment of the club, which is how a club should be run. She does exactly what Roman wants her to do”.

“Roman loves the club. He has devoted his time, money into this football club. He has made Chelsea what it is today. I don’t care what anyone says, Roman made Chelsea what Chelsea is today and I think, because of the amount of wealth he has brought into this country, everybody owes him a little bit of appreciation.”

Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick stated that Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham and Liverpool talent Ovie Ejaria should play for Nigeria instead of England national senior team.

Both players have already represented England in the youth ranks, with Abraham having made 21 appearances between the Under-18s and the Under-21s.

“What are trying to do is what we call VIP scouting, talking to these young players that are playing abroad to play for their father land,” Pinnick told to competesportnigeria.com

“If you talk about Tammy Abraham, he is like my son, his father and I grew up in the same neighborhood.

“So when they talk about him, I just laugh because I know what to do. As for Ovie Ejaria, I talk with the father often, he just called me recently. These are people we have met and they are all excited about Nigeria.

“I am yet to see a Nigerian that is regretting being a Nigerian. No Nigerian, even if they have four or five passports, they are always excited being Nigerians. I can assure you that we shall get them to play for us at the appropriate time.”

Abraham is impressing in his loan spell at Bristol City, scoring 9 goals in 17 Championship fixtures so far.

Ejaria has mostly been limited to performances in the Premier League 2, although he has played in both of Liverpool’s EFL Cup wins against Derby and Spurs.
