Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud reacts to his first ever goal scored with the Blues shirt in tonight FA Cup clash against Hull City:

“I was waiting for it [a first goal]. I had a couple of chances in previous games,” the French striker said.

“It was important for me to score my first goal. It’s relieved me a little bit.

“We can see the team had a good team cohesion. It was important to bounce back after some disappointing results.

“This confidence is very important to carry on like that. We need momentum.

“Everything is going in the right way. We’re very pleased with our last two games so let’s carry on.”

After tonight win against WBA Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was relieved to have found some confidence before some important clashes like the upcoming ones against Barcelona, Manchester United and Manchester City:

“What I know is that tonight was fundamental to get three points back, to win this game, especially to find again some confidence, because when you lose two matches in a row in a bad way the confidence decreases,” the Italian coach claimed after the final whistle.

“It was also important for us to have some rest and we rested for two days.

“We started the game with a few confidence, we made some mistakes, West Brom could have scored but we were back in the game, we scored and we could have scored even more goals.

“It was important to overcome this hard moment.

“Now we have important clashes, like the one against Barcelona, and we had to find our confidence again before facing them.”

After leading his team to an important success against West Brom tonight Eden Hazard commented the game on tv:

“We had to react and we did in a great way.

“Now we have two important games, against Hull City and Barcelona, we are there, we’re ready!

“We are back, we are Chelsea, we are the champions and we have to give everything.

“Sometimes it happens to lose some games but we have to stick together.

“Today we showed we got personality and we have go on all together.”

Antonio Conte was clearly upset after his side was humiliated by Watford with a 4-1 defeat last night.

“I have great disappointment,’ Conte said after the game.

“Our performance was very poor. We started very badly, without personality. We played with fear.

“We are not used to playing this type of football. We can lose, but always try to play football and try to be positive. Instead we started very badly. Then the double yellow card didn’t change things, but the situation became serious. Then there was the penalty, and when you go 1-0 down with 10 men it’s very difficult to come back.

“In the second half I saw great will and great desire, but I saw a lot of confusion. We were able to equalise, and in that moment we had to do better to manage the situation and understand the moment. A great team must do this. Instead in 10 minutes we conceded three goals. In this case, it’s right for everyone to take responsibility, me and the players.”

The Chelsea manager insisted his players should have shown more personality:

“To play football for a great club, it means you must have personality. It’s simple to play when you have confidence. In this type of moment, you can see who plays with personality and risks something. In this moment you have to show you have personality.

“We have to try to work, but sometimes work is not enough to change the situation. I will try to continue to work, and to improve different aspects of my players, but our performance was very poor and for sure I have to take responsibility, because maybe I made the wrong decision for the starting XI.”

Asked if he was worried to be sacked after the second humiliation in a row in Premier League with a “smaller”side, Conte said:

“I’m not worried about my job. I work every day and I give 120 per cent. If this is enough, it’s okay. Otherwise the club can take a different decision. Every press conference I am asked if I’m worried. I’m not worried. Tomorrow is another day. I can be the Chelsea coach, or not. What’s the problem? My soul is clear.”

The manager also insisted he sees his players giving everything as well:

“Do you think a club can decide to sack a coach if there is not the support of the players? Only here you think this. You think the players have this power? This is wrong.

“When I was a player, I was captain of Juventus, I never, never spoke about a coach with my club. And if the club asked me, this is not my problem.

“I repeat: my task is to work with these players. I have honest players who show me every day great commitment and great behaviour. The question is for you to find something wrong or create a problem with the club, and then the players. I do my job; I do my work. If this is enough, it’s okay, otherwise I go home and I have zero problem to sleep well.”

Conte admitted this is probably the hardest time since he’s arrived at Chelsea:

“For sure this is a difficult moment. If we want to find excuses, we can find everything: tiredness, injuries, but this is not my way to face the situation and solve the problem.

“The problem you have to solve through work. The winner finds a solution; the loser finds an excuse. In my life I like to be a winner, and I am a winner.”

Antonio Conte admits Michy Batshuayi’s first goal was the most important momento of the clash, as Newcastle defended really well in the first 30 minutes of today’s FA Cup clash:

“I think it was a good performance. It wasn’t easy because Newcastle played a game, prepared a very defensive game with a lot of players on the edge of the box and the three midfielders very deep and the two strikers to mark our central midfielders. It was very important to score the first goal. Pedro and Hazard created a fantastic chance with their ability and the final pass for Michy and then he scored.

“After the goal the situation was more simple, in the second half we controlled the game and didn’t risk to concede a goal.

“We must be very happy because it wasn’t easy. When the draw faces you against another Premier League team it isn’t easy. You can see with Liverpool’s game against West Brom and Spurs’ game this competition is very dangerous for the great team.

Speaking about Batshuayi‘s performances and brace, he said:

“I don’t know if it was his best game, but it was important for him and the team. For the striker to score it is important for the confidence, we are talking about a young player with a great potentiality.

“Today I think I showed that for me the most important thing is the present, not the future. Otherwise I would have taken other choices.”

“Michy, we are talking about a player that has worked with us for one year and a half and in this time he has improved a lot, in many tactical situations. We are talking about a powerful player, he is strong physical, and has a lot of space for improvement. My task is to work with him and every single player, to try to improve them.

“I am very happy for him and the team, now we have to continue in this way and it is very important for us to recover for the next league game against Bournemouth.”

When asked about what he didn’t like in the game, Conte added:

“If you see our squad, we don’t have three, four or five strikers, we have two. We have Morata and Batshuayi. Morata is out, there is also Hazard if I decided to play with Hazard, Willian, Barkley or Pedro. Hazard is a different striker but he can play in this way. We have played

“My task is to exploit every single player in the best way. For sure the performance depends a lot if the striker scores or not. For me it is important to score as it puts you in the position to win. But at the same time it is important that the striker has to work for the team in the best way. Then we have to decide whether or not we continue to work with two strikers or have three, like Alvaro and Batshuayi. I would be happy in both cases.

On the chances of Batshuayi to go on loan:

“I don’t know what will happen, but when you have to play in the Champions League and then FA Cup, if you have also three strikers it is the minimum. Then I repeat we have to see what will happen in the transfer market. We are talking about another player, I don’t know if we can take another player.

“But it doesn’t mean that if we take another player that Michy will go on loan. We have a lot of competitions, three strikers is the minimum.”

Esultanza dopo il gol di Edin Dzeko Roma. Goal celebration. Roma 07-02-2017 Stadio Olimpico Campionato Serie A, AS Roma - Fiorentina

Speaking after being knocked out by Arsenal in the Carabao Cup Chelsea boss Antonio Conte was cryptic when questioned about Edin Dzeko, who is supposed to join the Blues in the next hours:

“No news on Dzeko,” the Italian coach said.

“I don’t like to talk about the transfer market.”

And when pressed for his thoughts more generally about the transfer market, Conte added:

“No, I don’t need anything.

“I’m a coach and I continue to work with the players I have. They are great players.”

Dezeko, anyway, scored a last gasp equaliser against Sampdoria tonight, in what will probably be his last game for the Giallorossi.

The Bosnian striker has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea, as well as the club reached agreement with AS Roma for the fee, and is expected to travel to London before the weekend to undergo a medical and put pen on his new deal.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte claims his team today were tired but he also admits the display they offered against Leicester today was not pleasant.

The Blues obtained the third goalless draw in a row after the ones against Norwich City in Fa Cup and Arsenal in the League Cup, failing to create dangerous chances again.

Alvaro Morata again struggled in front of goal and has now scored just twice in his last 10 matches, but Conte insists other players need to start sharing the burden:

“I don’t think it is only Morata’s problem, also the other players, because we are not scoring goals, we are not conceding, but we are not creating chances.

“I think we played with a lot of top players against Arsenal, and then again today against a very good team. I think a lot of our players were tired.

“In the first half Leicester ran more than us, they played better than us. But we knew we were playing against a good opponent, maybe the worst opponent we could have played in this moment. We suffered a lot in the first half.”

After the 2-2 in Premier League ten days ago, Arsenal and Chelsea got another draw tonight, but this time without goals.

After the game Antonio Conte was asked if the teams, who will meet again in two weeks, are too familiar:

“To play three times in three weeks is very strange,” the Italian manager claimed.

“It is more simple to prepare the game because you know the team and the way they are playing. When you reach the QF or SF of this trophy in England you must be prepared to face big teams.”

Asked if Arsenal, who will play the second leg at home, are favourites, the Blues boss replied:

“I don’t think so. We have the same possibilities to go through to the final. Not to concede could be very important for the second leg. To play at the Emirates is not easy or simple. We deserved to be in the semi-final and be very happy to do this.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte commented the Boxing Day win over Brighton with these words:

“In the first half we had the right chances to score but didn’t take them,” the Italian coach said.

For this reason it becomes difficult because your opponent stays with 10 players behind the ball.

“In the second half we settled very well and created many chances. It was a good performance with good intensity.

“It’s the same performance against Everton, against them we showed 25 times we had shots on goal but today we scored twice. We are in a good moment of form and just continue this way.”

Speaking about title race he claimed:

“This season is different to last season. Last season a lot of times we won games and were a bit lucky, like against West Brom here, Sunderland. This season sometimes we could have more luck.

“We have great respect for Manchester City because they are doing an extraordinary thing.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte analysed the win against Bournemouth after the final whistle:

“I think at the end we deserved, it wasn’t easy because we fought with a good team, I made many rotations and I had a good response from my players,” the Italian tactician told after the game.

“We played a great first half, we conceded too much in the second part but we were able to score the second goal and it was a great feeling.

“It’s good to reach the semifinals, last season we were knocked out by West Ham in the second round.

“We have to fight for all competitions in this season, every competition has only one winner and we have to fight to win.

“Last season we lost the FA Cup in the final, we have to try to win something this season, we will try to win a domestic cup.”

Asked about the chances to challenge Manchester City in the title race, he said:

“I think we have to work on ourselves, we have to think game by game, Man City are doing something fantastic, they always win, they deserve a lot of respect because they are doing something incredible.

On Ethan Ampadu, who started again in the Carabao Cup tonight:

“Ampadu played a great game, I am happy for him because he’s young, I guess players like Cahill helped him, but I also believe Christensen and Ampadu can do something special in this season.”

Chelsea defender Todd Kane has been loaned to Championship side Hull City, both clubs have just confirmed the deal. The 24-year-old told the Tigers' official website: “I feel...
