Chelsea boss Antonio Conte admitted his side was a little lucky to get three points against Southampton today: despite having the control for a large part of the game the Blues risked to conceed the equaliser in the last minutes of the clash:

“When you do not score the second goal, you have to suffer,” Conte told Sky Sports News afterwards.

“You are afraid at every corner and free kick and the opponent has the chance to draw. We dominated the game, shooting 24 times, hitting the post and we needed to score the second goal to be relaxed.

“We had a lot of chances but the goalkeeper Fraser Forster was good. We have to be happy with the performance and the clean sheet.

“If you shoot only twice and score two goals, you must be worried. We had lots of shots but we must be more accurate in our finishing.

“In the last 10 games, we have won eight, drawn one and lost one. This is our run, you have to consider last 10 games, not just two. It shows we are doing our job.”

Antonio Conte was satisfied for other three points in the sack against Southampton but he admitted it was not an easy win:

“A good win. Yesterday I said we have to pay great attention to Southampton because they are a great team. I am happy because my players played a good game.

“I hope after this something can change. To book the goalkeeper early is important as the game becomes faster.

“It’s very difficult. Man City are doing a fantastic run, in this run they are also lucky, against Southampton, Bournemouth and Huddersfield they scored in the last minutes.

“Alonso is a specialist in this situation. Willian and Fabregas are also very good. Today I am very happy for Marco.”

Chelsea star Eden  Hazard has explained how Antonio Conte’s advice worked in their win against Huddersfield Town tonight:

“When we are playing this, you know… [loads of laughter] it’s easy to play!

“No to be fair it’s good. It’s good movement. The manager wants us to move a lot,” the Belgian player revealed after the game.

“We tried to not always stay in the same position.

“On the ball I think it is this. Willian move. I saw him.

“I passed to him. Passed to Bakayoko and it’s a goal,” Hazard concluded.

After being criticised after several dissapointing performances this season Tiemoue’ Bakayoko got his little sweet revenge tonight scoring the opener and being one of the best on the pitch in the 3-1 win against Huddersfield Town.

Blues manager Antonio Conte was really pleased to praise him after the match:

“He played a good game tonight and I am very happy for him,” the Italian tactician said.

“He is 22 years old and is adapting himself in our idea of football.

“Maybe tonight I saw the best performance from Baka and I started to see what I ask and what I want. To find the right passing between the line, be solid and I am very pleased for him and it will have improved his performance.

“I am not worried about him. He is showing me to have the right desire and will to improve and try to be better. I want to be very clear, after the first half I decided to make this substitution, but it was tactical and I explained in the changing room. It was only tactical, not that he was playing bad but that I changed him with Pedro and to be more offensive because West Ham played with 11 players behind the ball. If I don’t trust him tonight he doesn’t start, in a big game with a lot of problems, it means I trust him and all my players. In the last game we changed a few players.”

Despite a good win at Huddersfield Town tonight Chelsea boss Antonio Conte still believes is side cannot challenge in this season title race: the gap from Manchester City is too tough to reduce, as the Italian manager stated again after the game:

“We have 14 points less than Manchester City. They have won 15 and drew 1. In 17 games we lost four games, when you have a competitor like Manchester City that is winning it is very difficult to think you can win the title, it’s bullshit, bullshit. I would rather tell the truth than a good lie. Sometimes I can be too honest, I like to speak to the players and fans.

“It doesn’t mean that we are not going to try to catch them. This league is very difficult and to drop points. When you have a team that have 16 games and 15 wins and draw one game it is not simple to think in a positive. In the last 9 games we won seven games, drew and lost one games but despite this we are now 11 points and they play tomorrow so the distance might be 14 points.

“They are having a fantastic path but we must go game by game, there are six teams to fight for the title and the Champions League and we have to look to improve and have this type of game and I enjoyed to watch them play like this.”

Antonio Conte is convinced that Chelsea couldn’t perform against West Ham today because his players were tired after an intense period of games:

“Maybe today many players were tired,” he told Sky Sports after the defeat against Hammers.

“Also because we made a lot of mistakes in the final decision, important decision and it means we are a bit tired.

“But when you play every game in two days almost always with the same players, it can happen.’

Chelsea captain Gary Cahill was clearly disappointed after the Blues defeat at West Ham, admitting his side was poor in this afternoon clash:

“I thought we were miles off it from the start of the game. We allowed them to get the early goal which was a poor goal to concede on our behalf because we’ve been tight at the back of late,” Cahill told Sky Sports.

“We tried to get back into the game but that laboured start carried on throughout the game. We just didn’t play our stuff. They got the ball and then sat behind the ball, trying to hit us on the break.

“It’s frustrating in terms of wasting a bit of time, which was clever play from them, but we weren’t at the races today for whatever reason. It’s very disappointing to come off and feel like that.

“There was no lack of effort there, that’s not the case, it’s just that things weren’t going for us. The passing was off, we didn’t create as much as we have been doing for whatever reason. It’s disappointing because we had a chance and to give up chances like that can hurt you.”

It was the second game in five days for Chelsea after their 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in Champions League last Tuesday, but Cahill refused to use that as a reason for the performance in a match he felt they had to win.

“I’m one to sit here and make excuses. The fact is we’ve got loads of games, we played in the Champions League and get the early kick off on Saturday, and they’re the facts, that’s what is happening.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was very frustrated this afternoon after his team’s defeat vs West Ham.

According to Conte himself it’s impossible for the Blues to think to confirm their Premier League title and their goal is now to finish in the top four of the table.

This is the fourth defeat in 16 games. When you have these stats it’s impossible to think you are in the title race. If you want to stay in the race for the title in the first part of the season you can only lose once or twice.” – Conte said – “Today it was very difficult, our start was bad and it was difficult to come back. We created chances but didn’t take them and now we are talking about a defeat. Many of the players were tired. It’s normal. We started our pre-season with the same players, a lot of players are playing almost always. Today our ideas were not so clear. We made a lot of mistakes from the final pass. We can do better.”

After his fantastic performance against Newcastle this afternoon, where he didn’t only score a brace but he was man of the match hands down, Eden Hazard was praised by his coach, Antonio Conte, that had very nice words for his team star:

“Eden played a good game. Today we saw a good link between him and Alvaro,” the Blues boss commented on Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“In this type of game, when we decided to have a tactical solution, he had more freedom to play as striker and then offensively he was very dangerous. He played very well, scored twice, and the goalkeeper made two fantastic saves from him. He must continue in this way to improve himself.”

Continuing to speak about the game, Conte added:

“It was a good performance. Maybe our start was a bit a slow, not good enough. But after we went 1-0 down we played with good intensity and created chances to score. In the end it was a good performance. This team has a lot of professionals, when our start is not good enough there is always a good reaction, like against Liverpool. This team I strong for sure, we are in good form, good physical condition and strong tactically in defence and attack. We are working well and we have to continue in this way.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is not totally satisfied after today’s win over Newcastle: the Italian manager reckons his team’s start was too slow:

“I think our start wasn’t good enough,” the Blues tactician told BBC Sport after the game.

“After going 1-0 down, we started to play with good intensity and good football. Our start was a bit slow.

“We did well after only two days’ rest. It was a solid performance despite the goal. We showed good motivation and good intensity.

“I made rotations in the game and the response of my players was positive.

“I think that today, to play and win after two days of rest means a lot. Newcastle had the advantage with one day more of rest.”
