Japanese star Yoshinori Muto

German side Mainz signed FC Tokyo striker and former Chelsea target Yoshinori Muto on a four-year contract.

Muto is said to have rejected a Chelsea offer because he was scared to not have regular game-time.

Jose Mourinho revealed during a press conference a couple of months ago that his club were keen on signing Muto because of ‘commercial interests’, since Abramovich’s club in February closed a commercial deal with Japanese company Yokohama Rubber, who will be sponsor t-shirt for the next five years, replacing Samsung.

Muto, 22, has scored nine goals in 14 appearances in the J-League’s top flight this season; last season he scored 13 goals, a record-tying mark by a J-League rookie.

He has been capped 11 times by the national team, scoring one goal.

He is considered the next Japanese football star.

Japanese star Yoshinori Muto

Jose Mourinho admitted that Chelsea can sign Japanese star Yoshinori Muto.

As we reported FC Tokyo midfielder was linked to the Blues and Mourinho revealed in his latest press conference that if the deal will happen it won’t be just strictly related to football:

“I know Muto a little bit as a player but I don’t think is nice to speak about a player of FC Tokyo. In modern football, now football is an industry, you have to think about the financial situation, especially a club like Chelsea that want to respect FPF rules, but as a football club we don’t want to bring here a player that does not have good qualities or cannot be a good prospect

“We can say, that is more than football, more than management, in this modern times you cannot close the door to this kind of things…but we would not bring, ever, a player with no football qualities or capacity for the Chelsea Football Club squad”.

Japanese star Yoshinori Muto

FC Tokyo chairman Naoki Ogane confirmed that Chelsea mad a £4m bid for their striker Yoshinori Muto.

Ogane stated: “It is true that  Chelsea sent us an offer for Muto: it is a formal offer with conditions. They want to acquire him in the summer

Muto is 22 and last year was named J League’s Best XI as he scored 13 goals in 33 appearances in his debut season.

In the current campaign, that started last month, he’s still impressing since he already netted 3 goal in 4 matches.

Chelsea closed a £18m-per-year sponsorship deal with Japanese company Yokohama last month and signing Muto would strengthen the club’s hold in the market.

The players himself declared about his next destination:

“I have not decided yet at all, it is an honour for me to receive this offer from a great club”.
