FA CUP - THIRD ROUND: Chelsea 4 - 1 Peterborough United

Chelsea 2 – 0 Peterborough United

  • Pedro (18′minutes)
  • Batshuayi (43′minutes)

In today’s FA Cup Third Round at home Chelsea lead 2-0 with a Pedro goal after 18 minutes followed by a second by Batshuayi.

Pedro almost scored a second goal but clipped the top corner of the cross bar after a lovely attacking move which saw him have an easy clear chance.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has emphasised the chance for Michy Batshuayi to make an impressive impact. And after 44 minutes Batshuayi “staked his claim” in the team as the manager wanted by scoring Chelsea’s second goal. It was a late goal approaching the half-time mark just as Peterborough were trying to get back in the game after a missed chance by the Blues.

Cesc Fabregas is impressing with Chelsea as he featured 11 times in Premier League scoring once and providing 5 assists so far.

“Cesc, we all know him, and I’m very pleased with his attitude, his commitment and for his work-rate in training sessions, – Chelsea manager Antonio Conte said before the next clash against PeterboroughAlso, when I call him during the game, it’s important for me to see the right spirit”.

“Before the game, I have to take a decision on only 11 players who can start. For sure, some players have to start on the bench, but it is important for me in every game to see which is the best solution for the team”.

Then Conte added: “It is also important to have all my players with the right spirit, with the right will to fight and to win – if you start or if you don’t start. Cesc has shown me great commitment always and I am pleased for this”.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte underlined the importance of Fa Cup clash against Peterborough as his side needs a win to bounce back from the last disappointing loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

“I think in England, the FA Cup is really important because it is the oldest competition in the world and it is important to respect the tradition,” Conte told the club’s official website.

“The FA Cup is a good tradition in England and it is important to find the right solution. For us now, to give the opportunity to young players or some players who are not playing a lot is important, but it is also important to continue because we want to win and go forward to the next step”.

“We have a cup in Italy and it is a good competition, – Conte added – Once, when I was at Juventus, we played a small team and in the first game we drew 1-1. In the second game at home we won”.

“These types of games are always very difficult if you don’t arrive with the right attention and the right focus. Also, we all know it is a really important game for them and for this reason we are preparing in the same way as all the other games in the league – the same as we prepared against Tottenham – because it’s important to have the right mentality”.

“A winning mentality is to prepare for every game in the right way – not because you are playing against a small team or another team that is playing now in League One and you think this game is easy. No, in England, easy games do not exist, also not in the FA Cup”.

Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is fit and available to play against Peterborough this evening.

Antonio Conte confirmed yesterday that the Frenchman will be in the starting XI: “His injury was very bad, I knew this – he claimed – I talked with my club about this injury, and for this reason we knew Kurt needed more time to recover. Now he is in good shape and he is ready to play and to restart his career.”

Meanwhile, Zouma told the club’s official website: “It’s a very good feeling because I was out for a long time so it’s nice to be back with my team-mates and involved with the squad, the team have been playing so well recently and we are really happy with the big run we had”.

“Of course, everybody wants to play but we are doing very well at the moment and hopefully we are going to continue like that. The most important thing is that we are a team, we want to win so we must all stick together”.

“Everybody’s chance will come so you must be patient. Those who have been playing have been doing well but I am ready”.

Then he added: “We are working a lot in training, we do a lot of tactical work and we watch a lot of videos so it’s going really well, I have a good relationship with the manager and we talk a lot with each other. He talks a lot to all of the players and it’s easy to understand the tactics because he’s always right behind us, encouraging us, that makes it easy to learn”.

“I played a few games for the Under-23s using that system which was good for me. When you watch videos and work on the tactical side in training it’s much easier to take in”.

“Watching the players from the bench allows you to learn a lot and I always talk to the boys about the games. They’ve been playing so well and I’ve been very focused and watching closely”.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte revealed that January will be a crucial month for both youngsters Kenedy and Charly Musonda, who returned from a loan a few weeks ago.

A player could not appear for more than two clubs in a season and Conte said: “For Charly Musonda and for Kenedy it is an important month”,

“Because they came back from a loan and it is important to weigh up in this month what happened, to evaluate the situation in the right way, and to take the best solution for the club, for the team, for me and for the players above all”.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte spoke ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup game against Peterborough at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian manager, when asked about John Terry‘s physical condition, claimed:  “Terry is in a good shape and is ready to start to play”,

“He is doing great work on the pitch and outside of the pitch and it is important to underline this”.

About Belgian star Batshuayi, Conte added: “He could be frustrated, especially when you are used to playing every game with Marseille, but when you arrive at a great team like Chelsea you normally have to fight to find a place in the starting 11”,

“Michy is finding a lot of difficulty in adapting to this league and the football because it is very physical and is not easy”.

Batshuayi has been heavily linked with a move to Swansea, West Ham and Crystal Palace on loan. “He is only 23 years old, he is young, he can improve a lot – Conte stated – In front of him there is Diego Costa and for this reason, he is finding it a bit difficult to play”.

“Now it is important for him to stay concentrated on the game, to see the present and not look too too far ahead. It is important to be focused and to play very well, and show he is integrated into our way of football”.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports via Sky Sport that Antonio Conte is keen on signing former Juventus forward Fernando Llorente from Swansea, while Michy Batshuayi could join another Premier League side on loan, with Crystal Palace also keen on the Belgian star.

Moreover it has been reported that Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford could return to Stamford Bridge after failing to make an impact with Burnley, according to SkySports.

Bamford has made six appearances for Sean Dyche’s side so far.

It is understood that Chelsea star Diego Costa needs a backup striker as Antonio Conte’s team will fight for the Premier League title until the end of season.
