Former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland star Mark Lawrenson believes new Chelsea signing David Luiz is a good signing for the Blues as they need experienced players to return winning this season.

He told BBC Sport: “I think bringing David Luiz back to the club will turn out to be a good signing for Chelsea,”

“It seemed a bit bizarre at the time, but they have made money on the deal and he can play alongside Gary Cahill or John Terry in the centre of defence, as well at left-back.”

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte believes striker Diego Costa ‘is a passionate man’ and must improve his attitude to be a leader.

The 47-year-old told SkySports: “Diego is a passionate man. For this reason, he sometimes risks a yellow card, but I want him to improve in this aspect. I want to have Diego Costa in all the games. Diego knows the situation”.

“I want him to play with the right passion and the right aggression. He must transfer his emotions on to the pitch in the right way. Always”.

“I think that Diego is a good guy. He’s a player who is very important for the team. I tell him: ‘Transfer your passion and enthusiasm in the right way’, and it’s good for me”.

Then Conte added: “I like it when a player shows his passion for this sport. It’s fantastic. We do this work but, for us, it’s not work it’s a passion. It’s important to transfer this to our fans and all the people who watch the game. For us, this is not work.”

Costa scored a brace in the World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein on Monday and Conte said: “Diego must think about playing football on the pitch and about playing with Chelsea, to play with the national team in Spain,”

“It’s important to be focused on the pitch and to leave the other situations. Those other situations are not interesting for him, for me, for Chelsea, for the fans or for the national team”.

“I watched his game and he played a good game against Belgium and against Liechtenstein”.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill believes new signing Marcos Alonso ‘has a presence’ on the pitch and can help the squad to achieve the Blues’ goals this season, while his teammate David Luiz ‘knows the team”.

The England international spent some time alongside with Marcos Alonso when he was at Bolton from 2008 to 2012 before joining Chelsea.

Then, speaking about the former Fiorentina star, said: “Marcos was just 19 then and he was almost like Nathaniel Chalobah or the other guys here now who are coming into the team and trying to break through. He was in that position at Bolton and he is big and tall and strong physically but I remember he is very good technically and he is a great guy. He used to live very close to me”.

“I could see the talent he has from training and playing the few games that I did with him. He has a presence. I would not say he is as broad as say Branislav Ivanovic but for a full-back he has the stature of a big guy”.

Cahill and Luiz both played as central defenders in the Champions League-winning night at Alianz ArenA in 2012.

“David is back and it is very easy for him to slot straight into the dressing room – Cahill believes – He knows the majority of the players and the staff and he is very familiar with the surroundings. Obviously it is great to have him back. He is a great footballer and a massive character”.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill spoke about his career and claimed ‘is great’ to have collected his 200th appearance with the Blues in the last game against Burnley at Stamford Bridge.

“I feel that total has come really quickly in the period of time that I have been here, – the England international centre-back told the official website – But it is great for me because it means I have been in the team the majority of the time I have been here, which is what I always want to do. To rack up the 200 appearances so quickly is something that I am really proud of”.

“I didn’t realise it was my 200th game going into the match until someone told me a day or two before. The way we won was a great way to mark it.

The 30-year-old,who played with Burnley in the 2004-2005 season, revealed: “I am very fond of Burnley having started my career there but I thought we dominated the game and played well. A good win, a clean sheet and a 200th appearance makes it a good day”.
