Thibaut Courtois

Chelsea found Thibaut Courtois‘ replacement, should the Belgian join Real Madrid next summer: it’s Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The Merengues have been following him for a couple of years and are ready to splash a world-record fee for him, at least £ 70m.

Oblak, meanwhile, would not be allowed to leave Atletico on the cheap as he has a €100m (£85m) buy-out clause in his contract.

The Slovenian stopper, who was signed in a £12.6m deal from Benfica in 2014, has also attracted interest from Arsenal and Manchester City.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois believes the Blues earned another positive point against Burnley last time out.

The Belgian star told the club’s official website: “The pitch wasn’t good, obviously it was very cold so it wasn’t the ideal situation but I think we started very well and we scored”.

“We then conceded the free-kick and with the quality of Robbie Brady you knew it could be a goal. He shot it very well and then we couldn’t repeat our game from the first 15-20 minutes. We couldn’t create chances and I don’t think we had a big chance in the second half. In the end maybe we can be happy with a point but we always want to win”.

When asked again about Robbie Brady’s stunning free-kick: “I got a bit of a finger on it but obviously not enough, – Courtois added – It was a fantastic free-kick, with pace, and right in the corner so it was very hard”.

“Before we came here the manager pointed out they’d picked up 28 points at home, a lot of teams have dropped points against them”,

“If we could have got the victory it would have been very nice but in the winter it gets harder with the pitches not being in the best conditions to play. We did our best to win but unfortunately Burnley played well so we have to be happy with the point”.

Chelsea are still leaders with 60 points and Manchester City have the chance to catch Tottenham and Liverpool taking the 2nd place tonight.

Courtois claimed: “We just take it game by game and we don’t look at who is behind us, we just try to win our games and we will see. The Premier League is very hard with away games against teams like Burnley”.

“We still have to go to West Ham and Stoke, they’re always hard, but we have to work like we have been doing for the past months and we will be fine”.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois told the club’s official website that Antonio Conte‘s side ‘defend very well as a team’ after the massive win against Arsenal last time out.

“It’s not only the three or the five in front of me, it’s because all the team do their job and if we play like that it’s hard for other teams to score goals, – said the Belgian star – The players don’t want to relax. We know we still have 14 games to go so we just want to show that we are strong and we don’t want to lose points”.

“Next we go to Burnley, which is always difficult. It’s all about the next game and we have to be ready for that”.

Chelsea do not play Champions League this season, following their last disappointing season under Mourinho and Hiddink.

“In some ways it’s good, in other ways maybe not as everybody wants to play in Europe and if you’re in the rhythm of playing a game every three or four days, sometimes you can play better, even though it’s harder at the end of the season”.

“We have a lot of people on the bench who want to play and maybe haven’t had as many minutes as they deserve, and if we had European football they would have played more minutes. The other year, when we were champions, we had European football so I don’t think it makes a big difference”.

Continuing our chat with ex Chelsea goalkeeper Marco Amelia we asked him about transfer market, that is closing his winter window tomorrow night, with his friend Asmir Begovic on the brink to leave the Blues after 18 months:

*If I were him, I would stay: it’s difficult to leave a team like Chelsea in a season like this, he can add some silverware to his personal trophy cabinet and I don’t think he will miss this chance, even if I understand that he would like to play more.”

Diego Costa allegedly received offers during this transfer window from a couple of Chinese clubs, this is what Amelia thinks about the Spaniard’s situation, since there are chances he can leave next summer:

“I hope Diego Costa can stay, my wish is that he will stay next summer. If he will leave I guess it´s easier for him to go back to Spain: probably he does´t like London very much and I cannot get how he could like China, so I don´t think he will go there. But it won´t be easy to leave for him, because now he´s a leader, he feels this leadership, he feels important, so if he moves it won´t be an easy choice for him, it´s more difficult to change in this moment.”

In his time at Chelsea Amelia had the chance to share the dressing room with a legend like John Terry, with whom he´s still friend, and has got only words of praise and respect for the Blues captain:

“What I liked more about Terry is that he is a TRUE captain, he arrives to the training ground before anyone else, sometimes I tried to arrive before him but I never succeed! He always beat me! He leads by example, he takes care of himself, he acts like a a real professional and shows to his team-mates that to reach certain levels you have to behave like that. This is the best example he can give to his team-mates and to the youngsters.”

And speaking about youngsters and academy talents, Amelia revealed us who is the one that most impressed him:

“Among Chelsea youngsters who impressed me more is Ruben Loftus-Cheek,” the Italian goalkeeper said.

“He´s got incredible physical and technical skills, he can adapt to play in more roles and yes, I agree with Conte, he can play as a number 9: of course he doesn’t have the moves of a proper striker, he has to learn them, he has to get more experience and maybe he´s not so fast as a modern number 9 has to be. I guess it should be better for him and other youngsters that don´t get much playing time to go on loan somewhere else to play.”

Premier League is, in this moment, the most fascinating championship in the world and Amelia told us why, in his opinion, the English league was able to overcome Serie A, that was the best league in the world over a decade ago:

“First of all, the stadia are better: to have the fans so close to the pitch, without fences, it´s incredible and give the team lots of adrenalin, in Italy many stadia got the athletics track.

“Furthermore, in England there is less tactical exaggeration, the training sessions are more physical because you must be physically tough but you need also good technical skills and all this benefits good performances, the “Premier League show”.

“I had some managers that were too obsessed with the tactic and this damaged the performances, the freedom of the players to express their talents and the show”.

Speaking about managers and tactical magicians, we got now two of them managing the two sides of Manchester even if, until now, they probably didn´t fulfill all the expectations football fans had about their new adventures:

“I guess Mourinho will do very well at Manchester United, Amelia said about the ex Chelsea boss.

“When you have to put players like [Paul] Pogba and [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic into your squad and tactical system you have to find the squad balance again: they were a little unlucky in autumn, they lost many points and so the chance to be in the title race, but this happened because of what I just said and once they found their balance they started to play better and win. Usually, he wins and does better in the second year. One of his qualities is to make everyone feel important, so everyone is ready to fight if needed.

Guardiola, instead, got some issues to adapt to English football,” the 2006 World Champion says about the ex Barcelona and Bayern manager.

“Mainly because he is trying to bring a different mentality. I don´t think that this is arrogance, it´s just his way to work, he wants to bring his style wherever he goes.”

Thibaut Courtois, David de Gea and Manuel Neuer are, at the moment, in the world goalkeepers top 3 and when asked about who, among the youngsters, can reach their level, Amelia has got no doubt:

“Among the new goalkeepers I like very much [AC Milan´s] Donnarumma: he´s just 17 and already a top player, he´s got tons of personality.”

Amelia is 34 but has no intention to retire from played football: at the moment he is a free agent and trains with a team near Roma, where he currently lives with his family.

The Italian keeper, anyway, knows what would make him happy again:

“My dream is to come back to play in England: I was really close to join Sunderland last summer, but then I had to go back to Italy also for some personal issues, because there are things that are most important than football. I negotiated also with a Championship side and I hope to sign for some team there soon: I am free agent now and I can find a new team until the end of March.

“I cannot go to China or Arabic leagues because they got some rules for which they cannot sign foreign goalkeepers, USA are fascinating but when you have to take these decisions you have to think also about your family, so I would prefer England.”

Do we have a chance to see him at Chelsea should Begovic leave? Everything will be revealed tomorrow night.

Marco Amelia lived only one season at Chelsea, as the third goalkeeper, but even if it was the unluckiest campaign of the past twenty years the Italian stopper remained a Blues at heart, admitting that he often come back to Stamford Bridge to watch his team playing.

We had the pleasure to speak with the 2006 World Champion about Chelsea and Premier League and, like many football fans, he reckons that Antonio Conte´s side are the favourites in the current title race:

“I think Chelsea the favorite because are the most continuous team this season, they reacted well to White Hart Lane defeat and I guess no other team can challenge them, so I think they are the favorites: Conte is working really well and the players wants redemption from the past season.

Asked what the Italian boss brought to Chelsea this year, Amelia said:

“Conte is a winner, he’s got that in his DNA, he found a motivated team, that wanted redemption. The players are following him, he was really clever to adapt to a new football and a new league: maybe they were a little lucky in the first 7/8 games when they had some issues, when the manager was adapting to a new culture but they pushed back and then Antonio made a good decision to change the tactical system, so the team could adopt better his method.

Last season things didn’t work out well and Amelia explained us his special inside view of what the situation was:

“Last year I arrived after seven/eight games, after Courtois got injured, and speaking of results the situation was already difficult: the team were mentally flat, because the league they won with Mourinho in 2015 was the cherry on top of many trophies they won in the past years – since they won the Champions League in 2012 – so they had a psychological decline because they were satiated from these triumphs, maybe they had too many holidays as well.

“I remember some incredible defeats against Bournemouth, Liverpool and Southampton at Stamford Bridge where the team played well and were unlucky, and then the opponents won with late minutes goals, so it was undeniable that something was lacking in the mental aspect and when you start collecting negative results, many issues pour out and increase the difficulties and the tensions.”

Rumours were claiming that some players in the squad were against manager José Mourinho and unperformed to get him sacked, the so called “rats”, but Marco denies this allegations:

“It is absolutely false that some players were playing against Mourinho, they were just too relaxed and I remember reading the names of some “rats” in the papers and I was laughing because people like Diego Costa or [Cesc] Fabregas were some of the players that were closer to him, and I saw that many of them were really sorry when he was sacked but at the end it was good for everyone because Chelsea got Conte and Mourinho was appointed by Manchester United, that probably was his dream job.

“In the end of the last season we thought a lot about the following campaign, we were concerned about keeping the group united and not create more tensions and there was a great will of redemption for this year, so Conte found a team ready to fight that made his job a little easier, then of course he could motivate them again with his charisma and leadership, he was really good in this.”

Speaking again about Conte and his capacity to transform a team that last year reached the 10th position in the table, he said:

“The two-year-experience with the Italian national team helped him to rest a little bit and to know better other football cultures, furthermore he signed the contract three months before the end of the other season, so he was mentally ready and he could prepare himself for this adventure: he had a great impact on the squad and he was really wound up for this new experience.

Chelsea will face Liverpool and Arsenal in the next two league games, probably two of the most difficult steps in the title race, especially because the team will have three matches in one week, a thing they are used to this season because they are missing European competitions, but Amelia thinks that the Blues can overcome these obstacles with their superb form:

“I think that now Chelsea are difficult to stop, also the next two games against Liverpool and Arsenal, they can manage themselves and they got two results out of three that can be useful for them: it’s very difficult to score against the Blues in this moment, Courtois is on top form again and the team is very well organized. Then, when we speak about football we know that everything can happen, but I see them almost unstoppable now.”

Marco also revealed us he is still in contact with some of his former team-mates:

“I am still in contact with the goalkeepers and John Terry, sometimes I come to London to watch some games.”

Follow us for more words from Marco tomorrow: Chelsea youngster, a proper captain like John Terry, Mourinho at Man United, Guardiola at Man City, his future and more.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois spoke after his side’s 2-0 win to Hull City.

The Belgian star told the club’s official website: “We knew it would be hard, they’ve changed their manager and it’s harder for other teams to beat them as well”,

“Manchester United found it tough against them, they won against Bournemouth and they came with a plan so it wasn’t easy. I don’t think we played our best game but we are pleased to get the three points.”

“We wanted to win more games after the Tottenham result, and before we play Liverpool and Arsenal. Now we have a big gap, hopefully we can win against them and put ourselves further away”.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa completed his 100th appearance with the Blues’ shirt scoring another crucial goal in Premier League.

“We were very calm about it because we knew what was going on with Diego, – Courtois added – Speculation in the press is for the outside and maybe other teams find that stuff pleasing when it comes out”.

“But we knew it was just a minor injury and sometimes you have to sit out one game. Yesterday he was back, fit and scored a goal so it was good”.

Then he ended: “There was too much talk last week for him. He was just calm, working hard in training and he showed that in the game”.

begovic

Bournemouth placed a £ 10m offer for Chelsea second keeper Asmir Begovic and Blues boss Antonio Conte admitted the club and him are considering it:

Asmir is an important player for me, on and off the pitch, he knows that. It’s true there is this offer, the club and I are evaluating this offer, it’s right to find the right solution. We are evaluting this, the club and Asmir knows my position, that is that he is an important player for me.

Speaking about Chelsea third goalkeeper Eduardo, that can become the second one should Begovic move from the Blues in this transfer window, Conte said:

“He is a great sign for us, for sure, he arrived to be the third goalkeeper, the positions are very clear in my mind and my team, he is working very well, he’s helping me, Thibaut and Asmir, he helps the goalkeepers coaches. Now he is the third keeper, for Sunday we have this situation for sure, then we will see.

According to Sportsmail Chelsea turned down a £ 10m offer from Bournemouth for their second goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

The Blues didn’t consider the bid satisfying, as they aim to obtain £ 12m from the Bosnian stopper.

Furthermore,  Chelsea will not let Begovic go though without having a suitable replacement as they pursue for a league and cup double.

Their third goalkeeper, 34-year-old Portugal international Eduardo Carvalho,  has yet to make a first team appearance and would like another in place before selling Begovic, who didn’t have much playing time this season but was an important substitute for Thibaut Courtois last year when the Belgian was out for almost four months with an ankle injury.

According to reports coming from Spain Thibaut Courtois is desperate for a move to Real Madrid.

Ok Diario reports that the Belgian goalkeeper is “crazy” to go back to La Liga, a championship where he has already played three years when he was on loan to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea,

The Champions of Europe have been looking for a top-keeper after failing to sign David De Gea on summer 2015 transfer window deadline day and have been keen on the Belgian player for a while.

Should Courtois move to the Florentino Perez’s club, Chelsea would ask Colombian winger James Rodrigues in part exchange.
