Chelsea were beaten in a double leg against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final this term, before Antonio Conte’s men lifted the FA Cup title on 19th May.

However, the format will change from 2018/19 season, as revealed on Carabao Cup’s official website:

1 – There will be no extra-time in the competition next season, if the scores are level the ties will immediately go to penalties after 90 minutes. Apparently, this decision has been made to alleviate what is being described as ‘additional fatigue issues’.

2 – The only time extra-time will be played is if the final itself is level after 90 minutes.

3 – The seeding rule currently implemented for the first two rounds of the competition is to be scrapped, meaning that the big-guns of the Premier League can be drawn against each other in the early rounds.

4 – Returning to the penalty shoot-out situation, the ABBA system will be scrapped, and we’ll be returning to the ABABAB format previously employed.
