Manchester United manager José Mourinho claims his side beat a “fantastic team” today at Old Trafford.
Speaking after the final whistle the former Chelsea boss said:
“We beat a fantastic team: they were champions last season, for some reason, they did what they did with Barcelona, for some reason, they started the game so well like they started here….we beat a very good team but to beat a very good team you need to be organised but also you must have humble spirit, with everybody working, fighting and trying to follow a game plan.
Asked why his team started so slowly, Mourinho replied:
“They started very well, it’s simple, when they hit the post I was looking to my players and I was thinking ‘what can we do? who can I blame?’ it was played so well, so beautiful played that I had nothing to say.
“They are a very good team, they have a routine of their football, they have a fantastic dynamic of the way they project the wing-back so I was trying to find a way to let my players be dangerous in the central part of the pitch, because on the sides they are really good.
“So we found a way to play agains them where we didn’t concede much, I guess we had a good control of Eden [Hazard] he’s an amazing player and in the goal play he killed us, with the progression of the game we had more control of the game, even if we didn’t create a lot of chances, that’s they way I was expecting the game to be, a tight win.
“McTominay stopped Hazard? I guess he’s a fantastic player, very modern, a top midfielder, he can do everything, the only thing he’s not doing yet is scoring goals, which he can, but because I am playing him starting from the basics. He’s doing a fantastic job for us, I don’t like to speak individuals, I think Matic and Pogba played phenomenal as well, my defenders [as well] Alexis did a good job. We felt more confident after we adjusted the defensive phase, I think we beat a fantastic team.”
