Gianfranco Zola has joined Maurizio Sarri‘s backroom staff and will work as assistant coach to the Italian manager at Chelsea.

The club has confirmed the appointment today, while Chelsea are traveling to Australia ahead of their friendly match against Perth Glory at Optus Stadium on Monday.

Zola, who scored 80 goals with the Blues, told Chelsea’s official website: “For me it is an amazing thing. I am very willing to work hard because it is going to be a difficult challenge but I am pleased to be here, and to work hard with Maurizio to be successful”.

“It would be great to be successful with Maurizio and for the club and I will give my best, as I did in the past as a player, so I will give my best in my new position”.

“I am very much looking forward to the challenge in general. I would love us to start well and we are all very excited to start this new adventure”.

Chelsea will reportedly appoint also Luca Gotti as No2 coach at the club, with Massimo Nenci as goalkeeper coach. Paolo Bertelli may stay on following Antonio Conte’s departure, as well as Carlo Cudicini.  The club has yet to confirm the Sarri’s backroom staff in full.
