Today’s date is an historic one for Blues fans. On this day in 1905, 111 years ago, Chelsea FC was born.
On Friday 10th March 1905, in the Rising Sun Pub (now known as the Butchers Hook Pub) opposite Stamford Bridge, Chelsea Football Club was formed by Gus Mears.
It took fifty years for the club to win it’s first league title in 1955, the old Division One. With Gus Mears still at the helm as club Chairman and Ted Drake as first team manager.
It took them 10 more years to win their second major trophy. In 1965 the Blues lifted the League Cup just five years after the competition was created. They beat Leicester 3-2 over two legs in the final.
The FA Cup was the big one. The one Chelsea fans really wanted. And it finally came, 65 years after being founded Chelsea lifted the FA Cup with a 4-3 aggregate win over rivals Leeds in the final. They then went on to win the Cup a further six times.
Their first European Cup win came in 2012. After an historic run to the Champions League Final by Roberto Di Matteo and his men, they went on to beat Bayern Munich in their own back yard on penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time. This will surely go down as the greatest night in the clubs illustrious history.
And 111 years on, plenty of trophies later, the club and fans are more eager then ever for the team to achieve success. After a difficult Premier League season and being knocked out of the Champions League, the Blues now turn to the FA Cup as their only chance for success this season.
But today, we celebrate Chelsea’s birthday hoping the success for the last 111 years continues for 111 years more.
