According to the Metro, Chelsea are close to signing Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao.
The 27-year-old has refused a transfer to Sporting Lisbon, and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly very keen on a deal after managing Coentrao during his time at Real Madrid.
The Portuguese left-back is likely to leave following the arrival of new Madrid manager Rafael Benitez, who is apparently uninterested in Coentrao, who joined the Spanish side in 2011.
The Blues are rumoured to be offering something between £10-15 million for Coentrao, and are definitely in pole position in the race for his signature.
As a former Benfica player, Coentrao rubbished claims of a move to Lisbon through social media:
“Contrary to rumours that I will play for Sporting, and despite the respect I have for club, the only Portuguese club for me is Benfica.”
Besides Chelsea, Coentrao was linked with a move to Manchester United. In April, he gave an interview where he expressed his admiration for the Reds.
“I already showed interest in playing there. It’s one of the best clubs in the world, a club I admire a lot. It would be an honour to play there.”
However, these latest reports suggest it’s almost certain that the Portuguese defender will move to Stamford Bridge. With Filipe Luis reportedly wanting a move back to Atletico Madrid, the move seems very much viable.
