Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first Premier League goal of the season in the last game against Watford at Stamford Bridge.
“It was our first game as champions so we knew it would be tough, and it was, – said the Spaniard – Even at 3-1 they didn’t give up and they pushed us until the end, but we showed great character and desire to win even though we’re already champions”.
Michy Batshuayi secured Chelsea the Premier League title after scoring a stoppage time goal against West Bromwich at the Hawthorns on Friday.
Azpilicueta added: “This is the hardest league in the world to win and we did it in a very good way. Since November we’ve been top and playing with great consistency. We lost a few games but the team didn’t give up, we showed great character and that’s why we are where we are”.
“We deserve to celebrate, we appreciate how difficult it is to win the league. Last Friday we were playing away, we celebrated with the away fans but it was also important to celebrate at Stamford Bridge, our home”.
If he plays against Sunderland in the Blues’ last home game, Azpilicueta will be the only Chelsea star who played every league game this season. “It’s something amazing because during the season you have ups and downs, – he claimed - The manager showed great confidence in me from the first day, so to be on the pitch for every minute in the Premier League, and to win it, is something I really appreciate. I work a lot to be available for the manager”.
