Chelsea will use Mohammed Salah as makeweight in their bid to sign Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann, according to reports in England today.
Chelsea have been pursuing the signature of the Frenchman for some time and ChelseaNews24 reported recently that had the club had decided to meet the £43 million buyout clause in the winger’s contract, but also that they faced competition from Ligue 1 champions PSG who are willing to go above the asking price to outbid Chelsea.
It now appears that Chelsea will use Mohammed Salah, the out-of-favour winger who spent the second of last season on loan at Serie A club Fiorentina, as part of any offer for Griezmann. The Premiership champions, for whom Griezmann would be the perfect signing as he provides speed and skill out wide and through the centre of attack, are not willing to go above the buyout clause price.
It shows a change of approach from Chelsea who had hoped to use the money made from selling Salah permanently to Fiorentina, or to Inter Milan towards buying Griezmann, which could be up to £20 million. Money from the selling Petr Cech to Arsenal and Loic Remy to another Premiership club, as yet not agreed, was also thought to be going towards the Griezmann deal.
