Chelsea lose 2-1 against Manchester United after being the best team in the first 45′ and taking the lead with Willian after 32′: the Red Devils respond with Lukaku ( 39′) and Lingard ( 75′) so, eventually, it’s José Mourinho that wins the duel with Antonio Conte after the war started in the press room a couple of months ago.
The Blues start better and Alvaro Morata hits the crossbar after only 5 minutes, an effort that would have deserved more luck after Marcos Alonso put in a great volée assist.
Conte’s lads are dominant in the first game but not able to produce serious dangers to David De Gea, who doesn’t have to save any ball, while United seem strained.
At 32′ Chelsea take the lead after a counter-attack brilliantly finished by Willian, with Man United goalkeeper that could have done better on the shot on his pole.
This is the episode that wakes Romelu Lukaku the Red Devils up: the Belgian, until then one of the worst on the pitch, finally controls a ball and, after great play by Pogba and Sanchez, scores the equaliser.
In the second half Mourinho’s boys enter with more determination and will to win: after a few minutes Lukaku, always him, almost net the ball again with a superb volée: Courtois miraculously saves hits and deflects in corner.
It wasn’t long, however, before the striker impacted the match – with his cross being headed into the back of the net by Lingard with 15 minutes to go, the English midfielder had entered some minutes before to replace an evanescent Martial.
Morata thought he had equalised in the 85th minute, but his goal was ruled out for offside, though replays showed the striker was onside. However, the referee ruled him offside before he even controlled the ball.
Manchester United were able to hold on to take all three points and consolidate their place in the top four while Chelsea now languish in fifth place with a crunch match against Manchester City to come next Sunday.
