Thibault Courtois was demoted to the role of spectator in last night’s game at Goodison Park, where Chelsea ran out comfortable 1-0 winners.
Petr Cech was allowed to do much the same while standing up for ninety minutes, making a couple of good saves on a quiet night for him.
Jose Mourinho has dropped some interesting hints as to why the Belgian number one was kept on the bench.
“I played Cech because Courtois played consecutive matches and he needs to be very focused. The focus must be permanent. Also a goalkeeper can be tired, not just physically, but in the nervous system, Petr was working very hard in training.”
Is the Special One alluding to a lack of effort on Thibault’s part? It wouldn’t be the first time he’s made a coded reference to a player’s attitude.
