Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic has said that his side’s 1-0 win at Arsenal was both special and inspiring as the Blues continue to resurrect their season.
The Serbian made his 100th Chelsea appearance in the centre of the midfield as Diego Costa’s 23rd minute strike was enough to seal an important win at the Emirates.
Speaking to the official club website, Matic said that the win over the Blues’ London rivals had a special importance, not least due to the fact that Arsenal sat in second place before kick off:
“I am sure even if Arsenal don’t get a red card we would continue to play well because before that we were playing very well and we had some chances,” he noted.
“If I say this fixture is not special I am not right because when you play against Arsenal you have to be happy when you win, especially in this stadium. To play a London derby is always something special and before the game you feel something special, and I am sure that this win gives us more confidence for the future.
“It was a big win because we are in a bad position in the table and every point for us is important, especially when you play against Arsenal in this stadium where it is always hard.
“We deserved to win, we showed our qualities and that we can play good football, and I am sure that until the end of the season we will show that we are still a big team and that we can win something.”
The form of Matic’s teammate Costa, who has netted half-a-dozen goals since Christmas, has also been praised by the former Benfica man, who has also said that the dismissal of Gunners defender Per Mertesacker five minutes before the goal was the correct decision. Furthermore, Matic has said that the team can continue their good form, with interim boss Guus Hiddink unbeaten in his second spell at the Chelsea helm:
“Diego is a great striker and the red card was a clear foul and if he passed Mertesacker he was one on one with the goalkeeper,” said Matic.
“He scored the goal so he was important for us and I am very happy for him.
“This was the real Chelsea.
“I believe that we can show again in the future that we deserve to play for this club. Of course we are not in a good position in the table but there are a lot of games until the end of the season and we have chance to show our quality.”
