Chelsea duo Mohammed Salah and Christian Atsu have both been named on a 37-man shortlist for the African Player of the Year award.
The forgotten pair, both of whom are on loan at Italian side Roma and Premier League rivals Bournemouth respectively, are joined on the list by other top-flight players such as Southampton’s Saido Mane, Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
Toure has won the award for the past four years in a row, and is widely expected to claim the prize again this time around.
Salah, who has made 39 appearances and scored 22 goals for Egypt, spent last season on loan at fellow Serie A side Fiorentina and after a lengthy transfer saga is with Roma this year, with some rumours stating the deal has already been made permanent. This is yet to be confirmed officially.
23-year old Atsu has made over 40 appearances for Ghana. However, since moving to the Vitality Stadium this summer, he is yet to make a Premier League appearance. He made just five appearances for Everton in another season-long loan last season.
