Chelsea are interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 21-year old Frenchman, who has made 57 appearances for Madrid after signing from Lens in 2011, is reported to have had enough of sitting in the bench, and is looking for a move away from the Bernabeu.
This comes with the news that Portugese defender Pepe, who was reported to be a transfer target for Manchester City, is set to sign a new contract until 2018. This therefore looks set to condemn Varane to yet more time on the bench, heightening interest from Chelsea.
Varane is highly rated by Blues boss Jose Mourinho, who called him the best young defender in Europe, after working with him during his spell in charge of the Spanish giants. However, despite the increased interest from England, he won’t come cheap – he has a £22 million price tag.
Chelsea are also reportedly interested in Senegalese centre-back Kara Mobodj. West Ham and Newcastle are also reported to be interested in the Genk defender.
