Chelsea have reportedly granted Jose Mourinho £40 million to spend in trying to get a deal for Raphael Varane.
Having worked with the Frenchman at Real Madrid, Mourinho is reportedly thought to be desperate to bring him to Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea boss has previously called him “the best young defender in Europe”.
According to the Sun, his desire to sign the France international will be supported by Chelsea with a £40m bid for his services.
The question many are asking is why Varane would possibly be willing to leave the Spanish giants. However, reports suggest that Varane’s Portuguese teammate Pepe, whose good form has kept Varane on the bench for much of this season, has signed a new contract at the Bernabeu until 2018. According to reports in Spain, this has persuaded the 21-year old Varane to seek a move away, putting several clubs, like Chelsea, on high alert.
And with Chelsea’s defence having been unusually weak at times this season, Mourinho hopes once again to convince his former player to join the Blues with the promise of regular first team football.
