Chelsea have made a bid of over £25 million for Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes, according to reports in the British press this morning.
Gomes, who signed for Valenica only one year ago from Benfica is one of the brightest young talents in Europe and is wanted by a number of European clubs. The 21-year-old, known for his intelligent passing and ability to dictate the pace of a game, has been monitored by Chelsea for at least a season and is believed to be high on the Blues’ transfer target list this summer.
Valencia are considering the offer, if the reports are be believed, but could reject it in the hope a bidding war will increase the fee they receive for Gomes. Valencia are currently third in La Liga and will probably qualify for next season’s Champions League meaning there is no financial imperative for them to sell, as well as making it impossible for Gomes to use the lure of Champions League football as an excuse for requesting a transfer.
Should their offer be rejected, it is almost certain that Chelsea will make an improved bid with Jose Mourinho keen to add competition to a midfield currently dominated by Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic.
Gomes has only missed four La Liga matches this season and has scored four goals.
