Benfica winger Nicolás Gaitán is reportedly about to leave his club after five seasons.
He’s had a great campaign this year, helping the Portuguese club to the title, the second of his career of his career. He has scored four goals and grabbed 16 assists in 36 appearances in all competitions.
But, he is looking for a move elsewhere next season. Furthermore, Benfica are actively looking to sell him in the summer.
The 27-year old has a reported release clause of €35m but Benfica would be willing to negotiate. This means the deal could be done at a much reduced price.
Chelsea are reported to be keen to sign the Argentine forward, who can play in all three positions up front. Reports yesterday said that scouts that Premier League sides Manchester United and Manchester City had repeatedly followed him this season, but it seems Chelsea have now registered their interest.
Gaitán’s current club want to solve his future at the earliest, which means Gaitán could move to one of the big English clubs early this summer. Benfica’s president and Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes were in London yesterday, with the future of Gaitán one of the main orders of business.
Gaitán joined Benfica from Argentinian side Boca Juniors in 2010 for just over £7 million. He has made 213 appearances in his time in Portugal, with 30 goals and 67 assists to his name.
