Chelsea manager Antonio Conte explained reasons behind his decision to start with Olivier Giroud instead of Alvaro Morata as lone striker in the FA Cup final against Southampton on Sunday.

The Italian told journalists: “I decided to start with Olivier [Giroud] because I knew we had to play against the three central defenders, very strong physically, so I decided to start with Olivier. But when Morata came on, the impact was impressive. In the same way as Pedro’s impact, which was important. And also [Tiemoue] Bakayoko”.

“Morata is an important striker. I think he’s younger than Olivier. He has less experience. He is less strong physically but, at the same time, is very fast to act on the space. I’m pleased for both, for both, because in the last game against Burnley we started the game with both players and they showed a great link-up. I’m very pleased to see that, because I have another option now. Another card in my hand during the game”.

A victory in the UCL Quarter Finals against Barcelona could have been the spark in a poor 2017/18 campaign so far

Chelsea suffered a disappointing defeat today as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind securing a 1-3 win, which means that Blues’ unbeaten run in London derbies at Stamford Bridge came to an end after 28 years.

We understand Antonio Conte, as well as his staff and in wider terms Chelsea’s backroom, are aware that something could change shortly. Following today’s loss to Spurs at home, Conte’s position as Chelsea manager has been subject of reflections from the club. We also understand next clash against West Ham at Stamford Bridge could be crucial as hopes for a Champions League spot are slowly fading.

Could it be the last straw of Antonio Conte’s Premier League adventure, which started precisely at home against the Hammers in August 2016?

Conte told journalists speaking after the game: “No, I’m not worried, honestly. I think that I’m giving everything this season, as well as my players. We are working very hard to try to have a good season, but I think that, in the end, we are deserving this season. It means that our value is this”.

“I repeat: my task is to work, to work and I know I work 24 hours for Chelsea. Me and my staff. This is our task. Then the club has to take the decision. But, I repeat, I’m not worried about this”.

A victory in the UEFA Champions League second-leg against Barcelona could likely have been the spark in a poor 2017/18 campaign so far.

Conte had already spoke during his conference after the match, yesterday night before kick off, several Chelsea supporters had problem not only to enter to the stadium but also some of them were allegedly hurt by police and security outside the Nou Camp.

This allegedly violence was emerged after the match when Blues’ fans showed video footage. It would seem that several fans could were hurt and for this reason, Chelsea FC tweeted on official Twitter profile an appeal to all Chelsea’ fans:

“We ask that our supporters contact us with accounts of their experiences of this evening’s arrival at the stadium so that we can take this up properly with the authorities.'”

After regret of defeat, another bad beating for Antonio Conte, after the match a journalist asked him which team will train at the next interview. Biting question for Italian coach who is at loggerheads with Chelsea’ board and surely this defeat isn’t a good way to improve relationship. Anyway he answered to the question saying “It’s a mean question and I prefer don’t answer”.

After defeat against Barcelona and consequent Champions League exit, Antonio Conte declared himself proud of his guys. He analyzed the match admitting the bad beginning, also spoke about his tactic choices, about referee’s judgments considering penalty the foul on Alonso and speaking about Messi he abounded with praises.

Our start was terrible, to concede after only two minutes, but after we tried to play football and at times we dominated the game and had chances to score. Over the two legs we have hit the post four times and this is very strange. I think a fantastic player moved the final result and the qualification because in these two legs, Lionel Messi moved the final result. He scored three goals and made an assist for Dembele.

It is a pity but I must be very proud of the commitment of my players. They gave everything and we have to continue in this way, with this will to fight and desire to fight together.’

About Messi: ‘When you have the opportunity to make a great complement to Messi, it is right to recognize a super, super, super top player,’ he explained. ‘You are talking about a player who every season can score 60 goals, not just in one season. I am very pleased to have the opportunity at the end of the game to give him my complement. We are talking about an extraordinary player, the best in the world.’

About tactics choices and referee’s judgments: ‘For sure when you take this decision to play with Eden, Willian and a striker as a point of reference, you must be very good to have a great balance and not lose this balance. I saw great commitment from all the players, who wanted to play with all our potential. We were a bit unlucky over the two legs and we showed we can play in both ways. For sure in the first leg, defensively we were more compact. Tonight they scored three times but I think we did not deserve this type of result.

I think there was a penalty for Alonso and if it is 2-1 you can put a bit of pressure on Barcelona and I repeat, in the end I must be pleased with the commitment of my players. I saw great work.’

About the environment situation out of stadium before the match: ‘We are aware of reports of incidents outside the ground before the game where a number of Chelsea fans were hurt. We ask that our supporters contact us with accounts of their experiences of this evening’s arrival at the stadium so that we can take this up properly with the authorities.’

Conte has declared several times his desire to leave the Blues’ helm at the end of the season and Chelsea’ board isn’t regret to lose Italian coach who doesn’t feel supported enough about his ambition.

Conte appears on wishes’ list of PSG to replace Unai Emery who probably will divorce with Parisian team, especially after latest failure in Champions League. The track Conte – PSG could be strengthened by today’s rumors from Paris.

According to L’Equipe Federico Pastorello, Conte’s agent, will meet PSG’ board next Tuesday before Champions’ match against Barcelona.

More from Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, who had his say ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Blues are currently 3 points behind the Red Devils, while Liverpool remain 3rd with 54 points.

Conte told journalists: “We missed one game, against Watford, apart from that, from the start of the season our mentality was top, and I must be pleased about this”.

“A winning mentality doesn’t mean you have to win every game. A winning mentality is the way you prepare the game; the way you show 100 per cent commitment during training sessions. A winning mentality is to always have good behaviour, to respect your coach, your team-mates, the fans, the club, the opponent”.

“This is a winning mentality, and in every game to only have one idea: to try to win the game. It doesn’t mean you are able to win every game. Sometimes it can happen that the mind switches off, for example against Watford, not only for one player but for the whole team. It was a pity but I think we learned a lot from this game”.
